I am on first page for all the keywords I wanted, but I am on 5th and higher for the exact same keywords on Yahoo and Bing...How do I better my rankings with those sites? Thank you!

Yahoo and Bing's algorithm weighs heavily on age and authority. They also look at many factors such as bounce rate, time on site. According to Bing they use over 1,000 factors to rank your website. You used to be able to game their algorithm, but that has changed. Just continue to create good content and build quality backlinks to your site and the rankings will follow.

One thing I noticed is my rankings shot up drastically once I created a webmaster account with Bing.

Here is a snippet from Duane Forrester head of SEO at Microsoft from another SEO forum about Bing/Yahoo's algorithm:

Bing likes quality, original content. Skip syndicated content and articles as a way forward.

Bing does not respond well to "thin" content - in fact, we're constantly looking through our index to determine if items we keep have performed well in past searches compared to other items. We're looking for, in the end, the best result for a searcher. Ask yourself this for every page you have: Is this the single best result for a searcher? Have I developed an authority page for a given query; a page that will thoroughly answer a searcher's needs?

If the answer is "Yes", then fantastic, you're well on your way!

If the answer is "well, I applied standard seo best practices, used the target keyword in the <title>, <meta description>, <keywords>, the <alt> tag, in an <h1> and a few times throughout the page content"...the answer is, that's simply not enough to rank well on the popular phrases these days. It's a start, but in reality, user sentiment plays a bigger role these days in ranking. (Biggerin terms of it plays more of a role than it used to, NOT "sentiment has more impact that the typical seo work items".)

These days, you have to think in terms of the total package. SEO is not a stand-alone function. In fact, I'd suggest SEO is a 2nd tier marketing function, where the first tier is making sure the site is quick, wows visitors enough that they talk about you positively online, and elements such as "rich snippets" will be the way forward in the future.

I'm not taking anything away from SEO here, but the fact is, times, they are a changin'. What was cutting edge a decade ago is an expected baseline today. Is SEO dead? Hardly.

SEO is simply, IMO, due to be integrated more closely with other work areas. SEO and UX spring to mind as BFFs. Now, couple that with social and you're starting to cover the important bases for the future. And to define that "future" a bit, let's look at it this way:

    The future is now.

If a user searches on Bing, we return the best SERP we can for the query. The user clicks on the first result (as we'd expect, normally). They hit YOUR website, and...

1 - are so engaged they forget about the rest of the Internet for a few minutes and bask in your glory, getting the information they wanted, and more.

2 - are so dismayed they immediately hit their back button, suddenly popping back onto our radar, alerting us to the fact they were displeased with the result we just showed them - why else would they suddenly come back, without consuming your content? Displeased.

Pretty obvious which option you'd like to see happen. It's the same result we're hoping for - we want to wow the searcher with the right result every time. Things like rich snippets enable you to mark up your content in new ways helping Bing understand what all of your content elements are: videos, text, flash elements, images, etc. Rich snippets help you help us understand your content and display it in new, more engaging ways.

If you haven't starting thinking about integrating rich snippets into your page code, NOW is the time to start planning for it. They are a signal - a light signal - but as adoption increases, leading to richer searcher experiences and higher satisfaction with SERP results, that signal strength may well increase.

By now I'm sure Ben is a bit frightened and maybe a smidge confused by this "new" path for SEO I'm suggesting...

Not to worry Ben - cover the basic SEO best practices - they still hold value. But also invest in figuring out how to leverage these newer areas to lead your website to greater success.

All my EMD's rank better in yahoo and bing than in Google -- I think those two search engines put a lot more weight on an exact match domain than google does.

Age is a big thing when it comes to Bing/Yahoo, so if it's a new site... you will be waiting for quiet awhile before you begin seeing any significant progress. In my opinion, you are wasting time worrying about ranking in Yahoo/Bing, just focus on Google. If you rank well on Google, you should rank well on Yahoo/Bing too anyway, will take longer but they will catch up.

Yup!! That was going to be my answer too!

Is OPs domain is not an EMD?

Our experience is very similar to Rockwell's...our Bing/Yahoo rankings follow Google several weeks later. It's kind of just a nice bonus though...majority of our search traffic is through Google...a very large majority.

I honestly don't see the point in taking the time to worry about ranking in Bing and Yahoo, and the effort to act on it. G controls so much of the search market share, I feel your time and resources would be better utilized focusing more on it alone. In other words, the time you spend on efforts for other search engines could be used to do something else that is potentially more valuable or revenue-generating.

I do agree that Yahoo and Bing seem to focus more on age and authority, though I admit I'm no expert on their algos.

    hi,
If your website is new than it will take time to come in rankings in bing and yahoo as these search engines heavily depends on age of the websites.

What is considered new? My site is a little over a year old.

I'm seeing the exact opposite to what people are saying here currently and not sure what I am doing wrong, or right, depending on your point of view...

My domain is around 3 weeks old and not an EMD. I do have an exact match in the page URL though.

Todays SE positions - Google 570, Yahoo 5, Bing 10. I spent a few days in 2nd place at Yahoo at the start of the week, the other 2 have been fairly static though.

Now I did choose an easy (and unprofitable) keyphrase to rank for as this is my first attempt and I just wanted to get some traffic to start with while I built the site up. Starting on the first proper phrase now.

Is it just too new for Google to have ranked it yet? The site and page are both indexed and cached, although Market Samurai incorrectly says it isn't.

Its not to new for google to rank it, it depends on how many links you have built for it. and how hard the competition is, my site ranked top in just 1 week. If your onpage optimization is good and you build some good quality links you will see a serp movement for sure.. but it all depends on the competing websites for that keyword.

True, this is a very common phenomenon. However, as others have mentioned, comparably it is easy to learn.

Not sure if I saw this in the other replies, but Bing beyond age I always get shots of Bing traffic based on domain name (before Google) so long as you're good w/ your sitemap from day 1. Then once Google kicks in... Bing seems to settle down again and fall behind-and-in-line. Nearly every time, however, we'll see those big boost right off the bat. Don't know if Bing just gets excited about getting some personal attention or what.
