File Structure For Silo

When siloing (is there such a word?) a site is it important to have the files
in a silo structure, or just how the pages are linked together?

Working on a site that will have a number of categories and sub categories and while I have seen drawings and understand the basic concept am unsure if the files are
mysite. com/golf/golf-clubs/small-golf-clubs ?
Or should they be mysite. com/golf => mysite.com/golf-clubs => mysite. com/small-golf-clubs

Thanks.

    Good image example can be found at Silo Website Design

    I first used a silo type site organization with xsitepro using subpages (before I ever heard of "silo") as an experiment, and it does produce a good site that can get google's attention.

      It's not just how the pages link together, you need to put the files in the folder giving your site a hierarchy.

      When Xsitepro 2 siloes my site it puts the files in a folder and then creates a submenu automatically where specified so when you click on one of those files in the subfolder it has a menu with all of the files in there.

      Hope that helps, if you're confused check out Xsitepro 2 or Semiologic both have Siloed site design options. To be frank though I'm not entirely convinced it's worth your time as non siloed sites seem to do just as well IMHO.

    It is both. Relevant topics in relevant directories and links back to the homepage. Also be careful how you internal link.
