Heyyy guys. I wrote this article the other day for a site and was pretty proud of it. Thought it would be a good share.

Hope you enjoy (There are no links or promotion in this post)

How Google +1 and Social Media Is Going To Change The Web/SEO Forever

Right now, Google rankings and how people search for things on the internet is controlled by robots. The only way Google can tell which sites deserve a ranking is by creating little math algorithms to determine where a site should be..

If you have not noticed this system is f**ed... There is no perfect way to rank sites online using this method and with the rise of social media Google is actually losing touch with its users. While backlinks can be a good sign of quality, they can easily be faked and taken advantage of.

Think about it...

When was the last time you found something new and useful on Google?

Okay, now what about Facebook?

If you were deciding what type of basketball shoe to buy, would you feel more comfortable trusting the results in Google OR peoples status updates/reccomendations on Twitter.

See, this is where Google is F**KED. People are sending and receiving more reliable information via social media sites than from the Google search engine. If this keeps up at the current rate Google is going to quickly lose its dominance online as people begin to trust social media information over Google ( If Facebook placed a decent search engine on its site would you ever use Google again?)
How Google Plans to Fix This

Imagine if you were looking for new basketball shoes on Google. Normally if you typed in best basketball shoes, you would see a ton of sites that have been SEOed to the top of Google for the search. This would be semi useful as you results are not determined by what shoe is the best, but by what shoe has the best SEO.

Now picture this, (this is assuming you have a Google +1 account)
What if when you typed in best basketball shoes, Google returned the shoes your best friend +1ed or the shoes that people very similar to you (hobbies, age, education, gender etc) +1ed.

Holy Poop.

Google would be connecting you to people instead of the web. Instead of getting results based on backlinks, you would be getting results specifically tailored to YOU and people like YOU.

Instead of getting a ****ty SEOed site when you type in a search, you would get sites that people actually use and ENJOY.
The Big Picture

This is going to take SEO and how the internet works to a whole other level. The days of being able to force a website down Googles throat and hijack searchs are going to be coming to a close very soon. As with the growth of social media robots ,algorithms, and backlinks will slowly lose their purpose as PEOPLE start controlling the search engine results instead.

In fact in 10 years I am willing to bet my dog that every user online will get different search results based on who they are. There will be no targeting keywords...there will be TARGETING PEOPLE. If your site is not relevant to a person or does not have good content, PEOPLE will not rank it.

Remember, Googles main priority is not your online income, it is its users. So, ask yourself..would people +1 my site? If you answer is no..time to get to work!
My overall message

Of course continue with SEO, but expanding your thought process and providing value is becoming more important every day. If you are planning on making this a career plan focus on starting to learn to give people something they want into of sneaking it in front of their face.

This is hard to explain so I will sum up this post with a quick story.

Imagine a strip of road in the middle of no where, where a lot of cars have to drive through everyday (The internet) Now, one day a guy starts a gas station (a website) on this strip of road.

His business booms even though his gas station sucks and his customer service is awful. Since this high traffic road is untapped they literally have no other place to shop.

One day, a customer tells the shop owner he should probably improve his business because one day someone will do it better. The man ignores him and keeps doing things the same old way.

A year later, a young man opens a store on the same strip of road, but tries just a little bit harder than the crummy shop owner. Due to the quality of the new gas station and the recommendations it has received the crummy shop owners store (site) dies almost over night.

On top of this, because the crummy shop owner got comfortable and stopped learning he is unable to even compete. Overnight, his riches dry up and he is left homeless in the middle of no where, screwed for all eternity

Remember, the internet is still very new and is changing rapidly. Google Plus and Social Media are a great example of what is to come. Evolve now!

Sorry if I sound kind of harsh here, but your thread title is a complete oxymoron. The statement is "we are doomed!" then the next is "the next generation of seo".

Fact of the matter is we are far from doomed, SEO is ever evolving and as it evolves so will marketers and the way we market online. If/when these changes are made we will be forced to adapt. New software will be created to cheat the system, new methods will be created, etc..

So while I like your post and the content is definitely useful, I wholeheartedly disagree with the "we are doomed" school of thought.

To an extent this is allready happening but still Goolge dominates the search market. It is true to say that SEO will change and maybe in this way but I'm not sure it will happen over night and we will one day wake up F**ked as you imply.

More as Gary says and we will have to evolve with the search market and adjust our plans for long term success.

    Lol, +1!

    Look back at internet history...

SEO has always been about links/keywords.

Myspace was the best thing to ever happen to social media (FAIL).

Facebook will be next in line to fail, just a matter of time.

A year ago everyone just had to spam FB to make millions, what happend to all those IMers?

Nothing has changed with seo, it will always be about links/keywords.

Cool - so all we gotta do now is just game the +1 and Fan/Likes and other social site "signals" to manipulate Google results?

Sweet - "there's an App for that". Several actually.

If Google is dumb enough to rank pages in their SERPs based upon what some douche bag "20 something" .... "liked" or +1'd - god help us all.

How many people over 25 or 30 are +1'ing or FB Liking stuff on a regular basis. Who's got time for that crap? and ... wtf do they really know if they are?

Absolute garbage!! Ok there are case studies out there testing the power of +1 and it is all getting spammed to death already and not much evidence to state that it impacts the SERPS.

Plus realistically is your example or many more really going to match across many people? Probably not for most of the time, pretty sure I look for a lot of things online that my friends don't.

Tell you what, if people what to believe your thread, great, should make SEO easier for the rest of us

I have to agree with NEseO I don't see the normal backlinks and on page SEO going away anytime soon. Google +1 is not that great and social networking sites are just part of the grand scheme of internet marketing to get rid of fundamental aspects such as backlinking, and on page seo just like that not in my lifetime I don't think.

I think most of you guys are missing a couple key points:

    1) Google+ is still in it's infancy. If it takes off, it's going to change A LOT, and it'll work much differently than it does now.

    2) Serps will be INDIVIDUAL. You can't buy +1s from people's close friends.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4852119].message }}
  • Profile picture of the author Talen
Google +1 will never influence anything...it's just another lame attempt by google to get in the already over crowded social media circle which is already full of crap.

Serps will be individualized one day but look to see Google +1 bite the dust within a year.

      =D

The point I was trying to make it is very clear google is moving in this direction.

+1 is still a very new concept, and google has been quoted saying then intend to use it to influence search engine results.

If you look now, search engine results are already being tailored to a persons browsing history INSTEAD of SEO. Look at panda and all the updates, google wants change.

Look at how wikipedia, youtube and other similar sites are starting to dominate searches. This is bad for SEO, but great for google.

Instead of linking someone to a crummy site about recipes, google will link to a youtube video from a reputable chef

Instead of sending someone to a review site that is trying to cash in, google will send people to wikipedia or yahoo answers where people can get real advice

Googles main priority is to be relevant to its users. How much garbage do you see being SEOed to the top of google. With yahoo and bing slowly catching up, facebook/twitter getting bigger, Google is slowly becoming a bad place to find decent information due to SEO.

Think about why google is number 1 right now...because they do things better than everyone else...period. If you think they are going to just sit back and just say EFF lets just leave things how they are..well **** =D

Yes you can buy 1000 google pluses now, however do you think once it gets going Google is not going to be able to tell which sites are spamming it.

Yes you can make and spam very real looking backlinks, but when you go to Googles door directly in the future and say look at all these fake accounts that like my 1 month old website..do you think they will not notice!

      Overall
No we are not ZOMG DOOMED, but times are changing.

The bottom line is if you have a site people do not like, or if there are sites that do your job better Google will weed you out.

Not sure where you've been for the last few years, but Google has been delivering personalized SERP results, for years. It didn't just now start happening in 2011. I won't even bother with Panda, that's just something IMers use to sell products.

Anyone that knows SEO doesn't care If those sites are on page #1 in the SERPs. Most authority sites don't target a single keyword, they spread their site thin over thousands of keywords (that's an seo weakness, take advantage of it).

Wikipedia isn't selling anything which equals zero threat to an IMer.

Yahoo answers is 1/2 spam (backlinks), look around I'm sure someone has a WSO how to monetize Yahoo Answers/traffic.

Agreed the site should have good content, still has nothing to do with +1 (or Google). If the site sucks, traffic will bail, common sense.

        FALSE.

        See exhibit A

Here's the kicker: Bing (uses yahoo technology) has a partnership with Facebook, and they STILL CAN'T KEEP UP WITH GOOGLE. All that "social" data in their algo and they're still a ****ty search engine that loses over $1 billion dollars every quarter.

More people are heading over to Google simply because their algo is better. Why? because they emphasize on quality and trusted links. Social links are only a small sliver of their algos.

In conclusion, this thread is useless and I will not buy your crappy WSO's!

          Hi Becker13,

I have to say that I disagree with the majority of your conclusions and most significantly the basic premise is flawed in my opinion.

There is nothing new about social media, social profiles or recommendation buttons. Google has found a new and clever way to use the recommend button concept, but it doesn't appear to have any real SEO effect. It is more of a personalized search feature. It let's you see if anyone in your circle of friends have +1'd the listing. The process for getting your webbsite listed hasn't changed and getting people to click the +1 has no impact on your ranking is the SERP.

There are some interesting and novel ways that Google is using the +1 button and it will have a potential negative effect on search results if used improperly. But of those new methods, none were mentioned in your article. It appears that the +1s are becoming a way of rating users, not websites. They are mapping connections between individual users and websites that they +1. In fact, Google's CEO made recent comments about Google Plus, stating that it isn't a social networking service, it is an identity service.

The funny thing is that people who are trying to spam the +1s are doing little more than documenting a permanent record of their spamming activity for Google to add to their personal profile.

          Hi Michael,

I tend to agree, but I just had to correct you, Bing doesn't use Yahoo technology Yahoo's search is powered by Bing.

If you are searching for "new basketball shoes" (About 63,300,000 results (0.19 seconds)) on Google surely you would see a ton of sites. Smart searchers would be more specific in their searches syntax, like "goat skin red basketball basketball shoes" (About 980,000 results (0.25 seconds)) to get better results.

Google is copying parts of yandex. Backlinks still important just not as important as before. More value placed on contextual links now. Social Bookmarks are also important but only to a point. Yukon said it above keywords and links will always hold importance. Google just introducing new variables that also hold value. Google wants search results to show quality information on that keyword string. For the visitors and the advertisers. I do not fully understand everyones no google im doomed attitude. Yes having page 1 is good for traffic, personal case study from a 1900 exact search keyword with exact domain match. I held 1st page for months. When they danced with me, wow no traffic, so i set up social media strategy and now I get more traffic from social media not by spamming but by engaging. Thats what google plus is all about putting interaction back into the mix. A search results page is impersonal. A post in a group or forum like here where people interact is not. Interaction traffic is converting traffic.

Social will be big but it can't be end all be all. Who is going to like my how to cure herpes page? That's just one example. How will they service people who aren't on social media or have inactive pages?

One of things Google has done which I think will have more impact than the +1, is when you are logged into google and do a search it puts a question against each search result that you have clicked on. This says "not useful? you can block xyz's results when signed into search". Now if you get blocked enough, you know what is going to happen to your site.

Not that I agree that social media will be the be-all-and-end-all of how G sorts their index, but even if Google relied heavily on what pages were getting what votes, they'd still have to figure out what the page was about. Which brings us back to keywords, good content and proper optimization.

Yeah you guys should all stop building links right now. Better yet, go back and remove all the backlinks you've already acquired that you can. That should make things a little easier for me. =)

Honestly, I can see social being A factor. Not THE factor just A factor. The basics are still going to be the foundation of SEO no matter what.

Also, what about those things that people don't share? Like bankruptcy? Nobody wants to be like: "Just found the best bankruptcy lawyer! I'm so broke! +1!" There's plenty of other products or services that people don't talk about or share or like or plus because they're not comfortable with it or it's something they rather keep to themselves.

And yes, if social became the ONLY factor, people would just buy, likes & plus 1's the same way they buy links. No system is perfect, but more factors can be added to the system to make it more diverse. Just one more thing for internet marketers to do and and when that time comes.

I think social media will be more important in regard to SEO in the future, but I also believe it will take really great contents, including videos, podcasts, etc.. to rank high on the search engines.
We can’t fully predict what will happen, but I think it’s going to take time and website owners/marketers will have a chance to adapt to those changes accordingly.
