  • I've never had any problems ranking a .net. I'm sure .com is stronger in some ways especially if you're trying to brand your business, but for a keyword domain .net is fine.
  • .com's always rank better. .net's can rank too but .com's are easier to rank. You can just get both so you can own the domain name.

This is straight out of the Urban Myth School of internet marketing: it's utter nonsense.

TLD-extensions don't affect SEO at all.

But regardless of the lengths Google and Matt Cutts go to, to try to clarify this and to prevent people believing such nonsense (and those are quite some lengths, let me tell you: videos, blog entries, explanations at WebMaster Central, and so on), there are always people willing to believe it.

A quick look in almost any commercially published SEO textbook will also confirm and usually explain it.

This thread is one of about a hundred here which can clarify the issue, for anyone wanting fact rather than myth.

".com" domains may have other advantages (such as resale), but SEO isn't one of them, and never has been.

Some threads here discussing this have links to videos in which Matt Cutts from Google explains the reality (I happen to know, because I've posted some of them myself ) ... but if people prefer to cling to totally misguided beliefs based on the urban myths of internet marketing, rather than learning something, what can you do?

  • If you have two identical sites with nothing different other than the domain extensions being .com and .net, the .com will always rank higher.

    • Generally I have never found a difference between them and am happy to take either one. Although I have never experimented with having the exact same site on a .com and a .net to see how they would perform against each other.

The only exception I am considering is if the site is local to a country. I haven't tested this out yet but I intuitively feel that a (say) .co.uk domain would be superior than anything for a purely British site.
  • To me, both are the same. I've not noticed any difference between them when doing SEO
  • Typically, .coms tend to be popular among users, so more backlinks and traffic tend to associate with them rather than the regional ones. But Google wouldn’t think twice if it spots a .com or .net domain name, provided it has the authority and backlinks. f the .com domain I’m looking for isn’t available, my next preference is to find an exact keyword match .net or .org domains. if you make a little research, you'll find out .net domains are in a very good positions in Google SERP
  • I will prefer .com if it is available. But for SEO point of view both are same.
  • I do not think that matters, but the fact is .com is much popular.

There's no difference as long as you do the on-page SEO and get backlinks.

  • I never got any problem in domain names but as per me .com is better then .net.
  • yes .com domain better than .net domain bcoz .com domain is alway give higher rank to any site.
  • I think it's very telling when people claim a .com will rank better, that they offer no evidence for this claim.

These threads can go on for ever, because ineducable people whose information is all "urban myths" read only the title (and maybe sometimes the first post), don't look at the rest of the thread at all, and just add their misguided and mistaken "Yes, .com ranks better" on the end. I suppose they somehow imagine they're contributing something (and at least they're getting their signature-file on the board).

  • Just focus on making a good useful site and it'll be easier to promote and rank no matter if it's info or biz or com.

.coms are easier to remember and most people have ****ty brains so .com is better for a brand. But if you have good seo and content and google is your main focus, it doesn't matter.
  • There is a lot of information in this thread that is just wrong
.com will not always outrank .net, I find that laughable
  • same.. still depends on your SEO works or backlinks...
  • I think I saw this thread yesterday. Wait, I think it was the day before. Hold on. Maybe it was the day before that. This gets posted seemingly every day.

Most people agree that there is no difference between .net, .com, .org, etc. I'm one of these people.

  • Try searching the forum. This question has been discussed so many times

    • In terms of seo .com and .net, the extentions are about the same.

What matters more is getting your keyword phrase into the domain name. This can give you a serious boost.
  • Hello think more

    Don't get confused.

To my opinion any of the above are reliable.its just that must people go for .com because is common to them.but to me SEO is very good at .com /.net /.org . The must important thing here is good acticles.
  • Go for .net. If you can rank it well, it can create wonders...
  • i think anything with quality content within it should be fine..
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Well in every tool for top 10 it asking if your domain it's .com so this tell you everything, that to have a .com domain is better.
  • Google doesn't care wether it's a .com, .net, .info or anything, IMO they are all of the same SEO value. For branding I'd suggest a .com for any other EMD any ending would be fine.
