I don't expect you'll get much in the way of concrete legal advice, as this is a touchy subject. What I'll tell you instead is related advice, so take this as opinion only.

If you are this worried that you'll get in trouble by using the hp product name, you've potentially started your business on the wrong foot. Basing your business on a foundation you're worried about is dangerous.

Think of each thought in your mind as a bit of real estate. You want to do something productive with your land, right? Sell some product or service. Well each time you farm the land, you've gotta stop short, because one of those thoughts is worry that HP is going to come down hard on you. You can't be at 100% this way, and in business, you need to be giving your all.

In general, when you're worried about something, you will unintentionally attempt to justify it. "No, we're legit." "We're not affiliated with HP, but..." "How can I protect myself so that HP doesn't come after me?"

Am I saying that people shouldn't purchase domains like ScanJet7800.com? Not really. Another person could come in, buy that domain name up, and be perfectly okay it. What I'm saying is that you are worried about this, and that's not the place you want to be when building a business. It's good you're having this reaction in my opinion, so don't try to squelch it.

This is about you setting your own boundaries of what you are willing to do - what lines you're willing to cross personally in order to achieve your goal.

That's my thoughts on this, I hope they're of some help to you. Good luck on your endeavor.

While I have to agree with Resonic (it's sound advice) we have over 900 sites, of which half probably use a branded or product name. So far we have had less than 10 complaints and 2 of those actually led to a sale for a few hundred each. Sometime companies know lawyers are expensive and it's easier to just buy you off.

If you mean HP as in Hewlett Packard then yeah you might eventually get a cease letter, but probably nothing more, unless of course you refuse to cease after receiving one...
