If the links are dofollow and on a page with PR, it will spread PR to your website.

It certainly is but you should not just comment for the links, the biggest benefit of blog commenting is targeted traffic (you should only comment on blogs in your niche) and branding so you should not write something like "great post" , "cool blog" etc but you should write a few sentenses that are relevant to the post and make people want to visit your site to learn more. To get the most of blog commenting you should find commentluv enabled blogs on your niche and comment regularly (commentluv enabled blogs allow commentators to add a link to one of the 10 last posts of your site to your comment)

Yes, it is very much useful and Google gives the highest link value because these provide the information to the user.

Seconding what digger said, If you're going to blog comment, look for virgin blogs. They'll all help but related blogs will help more obviously.

Paul, I wouldn't advise blog commenting for the sake of backlinks only. At our corporate blog, we encounter link hunting commentators on a daily basis... and mark their comments as spam.

Bloggers tell from the first sight if the comment is just for getting a backlink - some "thanx for sharing it" poor grammar stuff without going into any detail and a highly competitive keyword as an anchor/name.

Still these folks' persistence proves that this technique works - so it's up to you to decide whether to resort to it or not.

However, it's better focusing on commenting for the sake of building relations in your niche. Thus you'll be sure not to waste your time and efforts in vain, attract targeted traffic and make friends.
