How do you get fresh content on your home page?

I've heard that it's important to have fresh content on your home page. How can you keep fresh content on the home page if you have a static page? If you have a blog on your site and have your blog posts previewed on your home page wouldn't that be duplicate content? Does the home page need fresh content or is it enough that you simply have a blog somewhere on your site with fresh content...

Fresh content doesn't have to be only on the Index page.

If you submit an xml sitemap to GWT (Google Webmaster Tools) Google will see the new internal pages with no problems.

If you do use the content as a regular blog (new content shows on Index page), just make sure your running a canonical tag that points to the actual internal page that you want to receive credit for the new content.

The reason I asked is because I guess google just came out with a new update that puts a lot more emphasis on content that is updated regularly. My main landing page is where my primary keyword is so I'm trying to get that page ranked higher. Wouldn't that mean I need the fresh content on the main page of my site?

Not necessarily. This will backfire on your ranking. I did two test sites where my sites had PR1(6 months old) and PR2 (1.5 yr old) with only 5 -10 post of articles in the inner pages and few hundred backlinks. I lost my rankings 4-14 days after I tweaked my home page.

I think posting fresh content in your inner pages should be suffice. As long it links back to your Home page with relevancy.

If you want to get your site home page be crawled and index by google then it is necessary to have the unique content. And for providing the unique content , refer so many sources online and books also which contains the information about your field. After gathering the information , try to write the short overview in your words about your field and write about your business with providing the useful and fresh information. So these way you can post the unique content to your home page.
And if you want to rank higher for all over your site , then it is necessary for your site to have the higher value for each of the page even of the home page.

I'm planning on writing many blogs/articles, just wondering if I need to put these on the home page or on a separate blog page. I don't want to get outranked because of the caffeine update...

If you are not changing the content in the index page you can implement RSS feeds in the index page. This helps in indexing your site weekly without any problem. Or else add fresh content that relates to your business and promote your site. This will help in indexing your site after the addition of the content.

    Thanks

No your fresh content does not need to go on your home page. It does help if google sees fresh content on your site and as long as it is interlinked well then google will pick up on your new content.

Content is not everything though, just think about, let's say a consultancy firm offering a service. The service doesn't change so neither does the content. I have a 10 page site where the content does. Of change and hasn't for about 2 years and it is doing fine. I am not sure how google looks at the structure of sites in assessing this. The site I am referring too is written in php so they may consider that, if it is a Wordpress blog then they may assume that new content should always be going on so would be needed.

Most search engine love fresh content rather than duplicate content, if you want to get your site significant rank, stick on fresh, unique content!

Even if you add fresh contents to your website and they do not appear on your main index spot or homepage, that is OK because Google will realize your whole web structure has experienced an update, even if your homepage remains untouched. I do know the point you are talking about, assuming that if your homepage gets updated perhaps everyday, some better ranks too would be achieved in the long term. But you can find a lot of top ranking sites with stable homepages.

When you take a look at their web structures, you may find hundreds of content pages already added to the sites and yet, their homepages have not been updated for a long time. Google realizes that websites with navigation structures also contain a lot of internal pages and people usually use the menus and navigation systems to gain access to the contents published. There will not be huge difference in terms of ranking if you just update your homepage on a daily basis.

How about adding your content on the deeper pages but having a latest news/stories/blogposts on the home page. This could show the first paragraph or a snippet of the latest three content peices and that way as you add new content the home page would be getting new content as well.

I usually outsource content for my websites. It saved me a lot of time and hassles of doing it myself.

Getting fresh content for static websites is quite tricky. What you can di is, insert ablog in your website and update it frequently. I know this is not a static idea, but it will work.

Other option is, spin your existing content followed by proofreading and publish it on your website.
