    Simple method to know your competitors if you using google adwords keyword tool. After submit a keyword, it will show you the list keyword. if you login in, you also can see trend level. stable level is more difficult to get a rank, and ussually I find another keyword.

    Other way, you can click one of keyword result and your browser will open google result search with that keyword. You can calculate opportunity of it. Yeah, experience, instinct also effort.
