I have just finished a huge campaign for my new site, and I am trying to find an effective way to check backlinks. Google Webmasters tools and Yahoo Site Explore give me COMPLETELY different answers. Which one is most reliable for SEO?

I find the most reliable to be MajesticSEO.

Im not sure if Yahoo Site Explorer is updating anymore because yahoo are closing the service down soon. It doesn't seem to be updating, looking at the SEOQuake toolbar.

MajesticSEO is a good but provide limited option for free account sign up.

basically i check manually but i think it's a time consuming.

      Hi fellows,

Please, realize that the OP is banned, probably not without any reason. I saw he started many different threads today, and is banned also today.

So, please, don't feed the troll.

Banned or not, I'm looking for the same info. The Yahoo has to old backlinks, because Yahoo Explorer doesn't work anymore. I was looking for the MajesticSEO but it's to expensive for me at that moment. Is there any alternative for MajesticSEO ?

        Regards.

As I know, MajesticSEO has a free version you can use (of course, depending on your need of data).

An alternative solution may be for you SEOmoz, and you can use it free for 30 days.

I don't use one either, so I cannot express an opinion about them.

          All the best,

I have tested SEO SpyGlass as well. I am a strong believer in competitive analysis. The same tools you use to spy on your competition can be used to spy on yourself to make sure that you are using effective strategies to properly position yourself. It can also reveal loop holes in your strategies.

I remember some time ago, I hired a guy to build back links for me even though I could do it myself. I checked his work. Some of the back links he create were extremely poor quality.

  • In my opinion, We should consider Google Webmaster Tools for the backlink count. If you want to rank on Google just check which links Google are considering as Backlink.

Why we should look at backlinks on other tools. They just give the number of links submitted in various websites not the actual backlinks which Google consider as ranking signal. This is my thinking though.

You are right at your place but i think Goolge hides alot of information from us thats why we should not rely on Google Webmaster only

For checking back links I use backlinkwatch a great tool to find your backlinks... Google also show you the current and recently cached backlinks built for your website. Use the following syntex:

      link:<space><yourdomain name>

If you don't give space then it can show the backlinks of your website only not the current backlinks. I am sure you would like it. If you find that your site comes repeatedly in the search pages then use the following syntex:

      link:<space><your domain name><space><hypen><your domain name>

To spy on others, I will use backlinkwatch. But it only updates after a while. Most of the newer site will not have the data. Sometimes when I am desperate, I will search for it, site:url.

IMO Ahrefs has the most complete and accurate data...gold medal

Majestic and Seomoz are pretty good....Silver and Bronze

The rest mentioned in this thread don't medal...

Spyglass is actually the best of "the rest"

        Again....IMO

but there is NO way I would trust my results to backlinkwatch or scrapebox...just NOT enough data...

    Yes, BacklinkWatch.com and Majestic SEO.

But mostly I just look at results and see who is ahead of me. Then I take a look at their Alexa data. IMHO Alexa gives you some of the best information out there. Is it quantified sufficiently? Not for some people, but it gives a good relative snapshot which frankly is usually all I really need!

    Hi,

I have 100s of websites. I am looking for a way to track the backlinks of each site without having to go to MajesticSEO.com every day and enter the data into Excel - for every site (impractical).

I need a solution to track the backlinks my sites have over time. I'm looking for software that checks MajesticSEO daily if possible and keeps the data in a system.

All I would need to do is enter the website and then its backlinks would be checked and logged in the system for me to view.

Then I could see how many backlinks my team is building to my sites over time.

I'd like to see graphs of each site's backlink count. January - 100 Backlinks, Macrh 350 backlinks, etc.

Is there a solution you guys know of? Wouldn't this be a useful tool?

    Thanks!

  • I think you should try SEO spyglass. It is ideal for monitoring back-links for both you and your competitors. SEO spyglass provides you with more information that assists you to get through links and decide on what to do. Exact URL and page rank are part of what is provided in detailed information availed to you. Another alternative would be to use Google Web-master tools which will enable you to navigate quickly on the back-links.

Google PR are going to be incorrect because after they changed there algorithm many tools that check for backlinks are no longer able to produce correct results. Yahoo Webmaster Tools is now integrated with Bing so signup for an account with them and they are very good at producing results. The only issue with Bing is that only produce results for your website and not your competitors.

Download Chrome and get a few extensions through them and I have yet to try all of them with any luck. Let me know if you find one that works well.

Yahoo site explorer doesn't give any data. you can use majesticseo dot com. I think it is good. you can use this to check your backlinks and also backlinks of your competitors. you can also use Google search engine by typing link:yoursite dot com. But this doesn't give lot of data and sometimes it doesn't give data at all. But if google gives that data, it will be useful for you to find your competitor back link data.

Hey everyone. I’m still new at this so hopefully I’m not missing anything completely obvious, but I’m trying to gauge the number of backlinks certain sites have and in researching the forum and this thread, there a lot of options and a lot of opinions.

The problem/question I have is that I’m getting vastly different results from all of them and I have no idea which is correct or which I should be targeting.

(for SEOQuake, I’m looking at both the SEMRush numbers, as well as the Google Links that must be manually turned on).

The difference is pretty extreme – sometimes talking in the thousands of BL vs 0.

Here’s an example. I did a google search for “Internet Marketing” and randomly chose “Internetmarketing.com”, the second result for me.

    SEOQuake:
    Google Links – 40
    SEMRush Links – 4

    Traffic Travis
    31,265

    Backlinkwatch.com
    711

    Ahrefs.com
    2728

    bluebacklinks.com
    2728

    open site explorer
    7483

    SpyGlass
    841

That is obviously a HUGE discrepancy. I have no idea which one is accurate and which are the numbers I should be targeting when I’m doing my research. Am I interpreting the numbers wrong? Am I looking at the wrong numbers?

Would appreciate some clarification. Thanks in advance!

I have a very different perspective to monitoring my backlinks. I do not use any of these other external data sources such as majestic seo, blekko and ahrefs.

Every tool I use to build my links has full url reporting whether it be senukex or even a link building service. I only use tools and services which provide full url reporting. I then take my urls and paste them into my desktop software which organises all of my links by tier.

By building and checking my own links, I can see an up to date picture of which of my links are indexed and are impacting my rankings.

For one of my sites, I have about 180,000 links in total, with about 18,000 going to my home page. Majestic seo has only been reporting 2000 links going to my home page! In their last update, their figure went up to 13,000, which is a little better.

But there are still another 5000 links going to my home page which majestic seo don't know about. But I do, because I build my own links and check my own links without having to rely on extrnal data sources.

I just had a look in my google webmaster account and they only show about 40,000 different links. But the difference here could well be due to my large amount of links which are not yet indexed in Google.

But the point being here is, I know which of my links Google don't know about, as I can see all 180,000 urls that I have built myself within my own desktop software!

It is now quite easy for me to simply filter my urls by indexed status and anchor text, and start doing things to them so that they get indexed by google and increase my rankings further.

You can't do this when using majestic seo or any of these other data sources. Even Google webmaster will not show you your links which are not indexed but do exist on the internet. They will only show you the links which are indexed.

This data is no good if you want to focus on your non indexed links.

Backlinkwatch only picks up links if they show up in Google's index, which is a bad way of checking for them (even google have been quoted as saying not to use).

    I quote here:
"The site command site:<domain-name> is often used to determine the health of a web site in a search engine. The thing is, Google's site command is far from accurate and too many SEOs look at it too closely. We discussed this before and I just want to cover it again."

I suggest you use Scrapebox. This tool can check thousands of links for your backlink and generate a report for you once complete.

I built a wordpress plugin which allows you to track and manage your backlink building efforts. Basically upload a list of backlinks and it'll tell you whether they're indexed or not. Nightly schedule will recheck for you, if the ones that aren't indexed that is.

Well, sorta But it's hands off..the system is always "on" since it's server based. No need to always click the check button..it'll do it for you.

You can use majestic SEO for this job. Hopefully it would be helpful for you to check backlinks. Moreover you can use SEO spyglass. Not only that you can also do that task from backlinkwatch.com. So just use a way among the three.

Ive been using backlinkwatch as well, and spyglass but spyglass seems to only report a small number of links sometimes when compared to backlinkwatch

Backlinkswatch.com & Alexa do not have fresh index for checking latest backlinks.

They give high priority to backlinks form authority sites.

For a SEO looking for latest backlinks he built for his campaign I guess SEO Spyglass is good.

Opensiteexplorer.com also have the older database issue for new sites but its 'The Best Tool' I trust on for major campaigns.

  • Google is your best bet if you don't want to use majestic. Majestic has a free version as well. Yahoo's version is outdated and even if it wasn't I'd take google calculations over yahoo.

This might sound like spam as I am also a moderator on their forum but it's truly not, I recommend this for everyone. I've been using seo panel installed on a domain. I've had to buy the backlinks plugin and also the plugin for local search engines (au) but it works pretty good amazingly for what is a open source....You don't actually have to buy the plugins if you know how to write queries but for noobs you wouldn't bother.

While I am on it, I have also been using screaming frog recently. It's not bad as well and worth the download (exe). It will only search max 500 pages on the free version. Again, not bad for a free product.
