Adwords - Negative Keywords

Hey,

Is there a way to include single negative keywords that will stop my ads showing for long tail keywords when that one keyword is contained in the long tail i.e.

My keyword (broad match type)
aviva life insurance

My negative (broad match type)
medical insurance

Keyword I don't want my add to show for
aviva medical insurance
medical insurance

If I applied the following in a campaign can someone confirm that the keywords I don't want my add to show for, wouldn't appear or would I need to include all the long tails in my negatives as well?

  • Don't use plain old broad. Use modified broad:

    +aviva +life +insurance

You won't need negatives, at least not as much. Don't forget phrase and exact too.

But if your ads are triggering on the broad for "aviva medical insurance" that you don't want, yes, the negative "medical insurance" should prevent them from showing. However, I believe in trying to help out the system so I'd use the modified broad instead and use only "medical" as a negative, although you shouldn't need it.
  • Thanks for the heads up,

Think I'll steer away from that modified broad match it will bring up way too much irrelevance and likely cost me.

    • add the - in front of anything you dont want to match

      -aviva medical insurance
      -medical insurance

      BTW in this example
-aviva medical insurance is not needed because you would have already filtered on Medical insurance
