Does language affect Search Engine Rankings?

Hi, I have got a question about SEO and language. I have got a french website, with french content, and I need it to rank high for a keyword (not in french).
E.g. GTA San Andreas game
or Call of Duty Black-Ops
These are english words, but also used in french.
I am currently #1 for one keyword of that type in Google.fr, but I am nowhere to be found on Google.com
Does language affect my rankings on Google.com? Does google.com give priority to english sites?
