I am just traveling along learning as I go. I am almost embarrassed to ask it.

I understand about keywords. Tags seem to be the same thing. and then there meta tags.

And what is the difference between title and title tag

I searched the FAQ and looked on google but its like you are just supposed to know. I guess I could try wiki.

Thanks warriors!

Do you you mean tags, as in what you tag articles/posts using
    something like wordpress or other?

Tags are ways of internally categorizing and linking your articles/posts
    together.

Since you are in charge of your tags, it really has little
to do with search engines. Like meta keywords as well.
You can tag any article with anything, so it's quite
    meaningless for any external force.

These tags or completely different than metas.

Meta tags, one of which is indeed a title, is the title for
the page, not necessarily the one you choose for the
title of your article/post. Both of those are important.

So why do I need a title tag?
and how do I put one in the title.
I thought it was just the keyword in the title that was important. So there is a meta tag too?

Your signature is a bit daunting. I'm certainly trying to be smarter.

Meta tags: Things use to introduce your website, often including 3 parts, <title>xxx</title>, <meta description="xxx"> and <meta keywords="xxx">
Keywords: Things your website targeted on search engine. E.g. Your website's keyword is "warrior", you are targeting the rank of it when people search "warrior" on search engine.
Tags: Often used in articles, tell your reader what's the artiles mainly about.
Personal understanding, I might be wrong though.

While doing SEO, one thing for sure that is search engine care about some html tags like title tag, meta description tag and Heading tags, but totally ignore the keywords meta tag. As people use to fill this tag and do keywords stuffing. Now search engine dont care about keyword meta tag any more.

For ranking on search engine you need to include the target keywords in title and meta description by following the search engine rules...

Never be embarrassed to ask a question. That's how we learn.

I understand about keywords. Tags seem to be the same thing. and then there meta tags.
Well, it depends on what you mean by "keywords" and "tags".

    Generally:

Keywords - refers to the set of words that you are trying to rank you site for. Keywords are used in many different places such as the title, headings, contained in articles, anchor text in links, image titles etc.

Tags - this is a quite generic term for any system that allows you to specify words/phrases that are related to the article, image, video.

Then there are more specific uses of tags, such as:

HTML Tags - An HTML tag is anything surrounded by <>. For example, <h1> is known as a H1 tag.

WordPress Tags - You can apply tags (related words) to a WordPress post. Tags are just another way of navigating and finding articles on a WordPress site.

And what is the difference between title and title tag
    A title tag, looks like:

    <title>This is my title</title>

This is what appears in your browser tab when you navigate to the page. It is also what Google and other search engines display in the search results.

By title, I'm assuming you are referring to the title of a post/page in WordPress.

In most cases, this will be a H1 tag, but it does depend on what theme you are using.
