Now it's time to find another backlink checker tool...This will be quite a hard thing to do because there are many SEOs are using that tool..

Why did they shut it down?

To get more people into using Bing webmaster tools maybe?

Since Yahoo Site Explorer is already gone, Majestic SEO is what I'm using as a perfect alternative.

Well as for the many changes in our life...we have to adapt and find other ways...
The good news is that there are still plenty of other link data tools we can use.
Some of the popular ones are
    Open Site Explorer
    Majestic SEO
    Link Diagnosis
    Google Webmaster Tools

Quite the opposite indeed..no updates and fresh links since almost a month now.

Back to topic, it's foolish to think other tools can simply replace YSE for the moment. Majestic, Seomoz, etc. are all private tools that don't have the industrial level capacity. Both Google and Bing webmaster tools are pretty limited in terms of what YSE used to show us.
It's actually a big let down for people in need of a proper competitors analysis and new backlink opportunities.

I agree. It's a big loss. The other alternatives do not crawl every site on the web. They don't have the capacity.

Thanks surely is bad news, as Yahoo Site Explorer used to provide a key and hint regarding the backlinks that the website of the competitor had in respect to our own website.

You can still find their indexed backlinks using search queries. You won't get as many results, but you should get enough to keep you busy.

Right now it looks like the best alternative is Majestic.

ahrefs.com is also good but not giving the same taste as YSE.

it is really sad to know that we cannot use yahoo site explorer anymore.. but their idea of merging with Bing Webmaster Tools is i think not a good idea as it is not a good tool, i mean you will not feel comfortable of using it.. that my opinion..

Anyway, for those who are looking for backlink checker tool try backlinkwatch.com
