Witch command is the proper one to use when trying to see what your competition is? obviously it is not "quotes" like people have been preaching for the last 5 years. I normally look at allintitle, Is this the correct way?
#allintitle #allinurl #ect #quots

    1) keyword (no quotes)
    2) Click Search button

The number one site is your competition.

It helps to check the other pages listed on the first page of the SERPs, you never know what stage they are in trying to climb the seo ladder, everyone wants to be #1.

A quick check I do for the #1 site in the SERPs for my keyword is:

    intitle:"keyword" site:domain.com

That's only to see how serious the #1 site/page is about ranking the target keyword.

True, just type your keyword and the first one that will appear will obviously be your competitor.

As for search operators, here's a good list and how to use them for Google Yahoo and Bing:

Its exhaustive to check competitors manually... Moreover, results are based on different factors.

I prefer to use some tool, like 'Keyword Country' for competition analysis.

Though its paid but atleast it helps in cutting down time and efforts in analysis.

I would combine allintitle with a measure of authority like:

      1. Google Page Rank
      2. Google Moz Authority
      3. Semrush authority

AIT and one of those 3 combined together allow to do a powerful filter at a first step when screening bunch of keywords.

Allintitle and other similar "crap" is pre 2007 thing
When I started with affiliate marketing and SEO, I have to admit, I did use those stupid terms and failed hard as well. I wish somebody had told me that:

    A) ... you should check your competition by valuating the first 3-5 websites that rank for the main keyword
    B) ... you should understand the difference between strong and low-quality/spammy links
    C) ... you should understand that stronger domains don't necessarily need hundreds of backlinks to rank well with their articles
    D) ... that internal links are same important as regular links
    E) ... that rankings don't come overnight

    etc..
