Hi warriors,

I am searching good free keyword research tool. Curently I am using this keyword research tool: Seo Book Keyword Suggestion Tool

It is not very bad tool, but this tool doesn't show competing pages and shows only a limited number of keywords.

Are there any tools which show competing pages and unlimited keyword number?

I use Market Samurai, as well. The price tag may 'appear' high, however, IMHO, it is the best....and that price tag has paid for itself very easily.

I recently downloaded the Domain Name Samurai because I want to launch a new website and Im confused about what to name it.

I noticed that this free software also has the Market Samurai Keyword tool. Do you have any clue if its different than the Market Samurai paid version? Thank you!

100% agree but it's been jittery recently, a lot of google updates have meant it's been unusable for 2-3 day stretches.

Yes i agree. This is one of the best tools available. This tool is useful in more than one ways. The actual price is around $145. You might want to sign up for a trial and then you will be offered a discounted price of $97. No monthly fees. Just a one time investment.

I imagine they're not going to stay afloat too much longer if you know what I mean. With all the changes recently, and the switch to Bing data, once the lifetime license sales stop, they're updates will too.

Monthly software is always a safe bet.

+1 for Market Samurai here, too.

It does show the number of competing pages - for whatever that's worth to you - and allows you to analyse the backlink PR and anchor-text of the top 10 competition, plus any custom sites/pages you enter into it.

The revamped Keyword Research module also generates up to 800 keywords "per pass" now, I believe - so long as you enter into it your Google Account login details.

I use Market Samurai. I think it is the best. Not only does it do a good job but it is regularly updated and maintained. And a fixed price too no monthly fee. The best way to describe it is that it takes the research you could do manually in your browser for free, and spend hours on and presents the essential results to you in seconds. If you value your time it is worth buying.

WebCEO I used and got a refund - it's a bit slow and dated. It has a lot of feature but not convinced on the usefulness. MS is better in that you get results that matter much more quickly.

I tried Wordtracker on a trial. Wasn't convinced when it came up with very long tail keywords and said 100+ visits per day. I think their data is slightly wrong and as soon as I distrusted the data I couldn't use it anymore.

Only downside to MS is it Google-only data. No Yahoo/Bing is taken account of. But I do get some keywords where the traffic comes from Y and B and not G. So do some manual Y/B research as well or perhaps find a different tool for that if you need.

Bear in mind there is no perfect keyword research solution, and there never will be because the search engines never release totally accurate data.

Indeed. Wordtracker, as I understand it, takes (or used to take) their search volume data from small meta search engines, which almost nobody really uses.

They may or may not have then extrapolated that data, somehow, in an attempt to estimate the number of searches you're likely to receive from the three big search engines - Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Seems a kind of arcane, hit-and-miss approach, and based a little too much on guesswork, for my liking. And what's the point in that, when you can just get the data straight from Google (and ok, I know it's not completely accurate all of the time - but it's much better), nicely retrieved and presented into tables, ready to analyse, in a tool like Market Samurai?

So that was a hunch or did you run some tests to check the accuracy? I am asking because I always wonder if there is no merit to those paid keyword tools, why do people still pay for those!

Also, any thoughts on "Keyword Spy" from anyone ?

There is probably some information on their site pertaining to their data-sources and what not.

I do know for sure that they took it and extrapolated it from meta search-engines, at one point, however. I feel sure that it's still the same now, and hasn't changed.

I still believe that it's far too vague, hit-and-miss an approach to be too useful and accurate (and that was my experience, too, for the short time that I used it), but a lot of people seem to like Wordtracker despite this, so "fair enough". :p

No kiddin', lol. Market Samurai had my desktop PC slow to a grinding halt whenever I ran it. Frustration to the max! Though this beast of a little laptop I now have sees it running almost as fluidly as beer passes my lips on a night out - just without all the ill after-effects.

Seriously though ... it's a great piece of software. Although use of the Keyword Research module is free, it's worth buying if only for the addition of the SEO Competition and Rank Tracker modules. (Which, collectively, happen to be the only 3 modules I really use, anyway.)

From the top of my head, it's an Intel Core i5 M520 processor @ 2.4Ghz (dual core, I think?) with 4GB RAM.

You can probably see the rest of the specs by looking up the "Lenovo Thinkpad X201 Elite" base configuration at Lenovo's UK site. I made some small custom configurations, but only by way of adding a touchpad in addition to the trackpoint and self-encrypting hard disk, etc. In other words, nothing that'd really affect the overall performance of the machine.

Not Lenovo's meatiest laptop by any means, but I wanted a balance between good portability and speed, and I think the X201 is (or was when I bought it last June/July) about the best out there for that.

It does really glide through most tasks, though. Photoshop works a treat even though it only has integrated Intel HD graphics which shares RAM, and Market Samurai absolutely flies with the system set to "Maximum Performance" in the Power Manager.

          Great little laptop.

Can I just ask, except for the rounding and latency of the free google keywords tool, what is wrong with it as far as finding keyword volumes go? I am annoyed that in general research that Google has killed off the previous month data columns, but for a rough idea of Exact search volumes ... what is wrong with this orginal free tool?

      To Your Success,
      Hi hellingent

A couple of days ago, I sent the debugging log to MS support team. You are right. It is getting slower especially when you have a large list of keyword to analyze. My problem is with Rank Tracker. This module hangs several times when I use a large list of keywords. Even with a smaller list, it is very slow when clicking to other modules or changing any parameter.

I am still waiting for their recommendation because I did ask them if I need a faster processor or probably 8GB RAM to overcome the sluggish performance of MS.

      Cheers!

      Andy

Since I am not much interest in investing money, I don't use Market Samurai. I have heard it to be the best one though.

I use the Google adwords keyword toll to get a lot of keywords then I verify them with wordtracker free tool. Now I get a list of keyword that are common on both the tools. The last and the final step I veriify them with alexa and it gives me the best possible keywords to take. Never failed in getting traffic with the keywords that I take. I trust alexa to be the best source to get keywords for your site.

it's imperative to choose the right set of keywords from the start of the process. For this, the online marketer mainly uses Google Adwards keyword tool. Other than these, there are many online marketing tools available that you should use, for the analysis of keywords. long tail keywords are also advisable to incorporate .

      Are you ready?

      Ok...The Google Keyword Tool.

You will be able to find some great keywords by using that free tool. I know a lot of people like market samurai, wordtracker and so on but to be quite honest you will do find using the Google keyword tool.

What I find funny is that most of this other tools (probably all) get their data from the Google keyword tool itself.

So start gathering up ideas and make use of the google keyword tool. I should be putting up a nice post of how simple keyword research really is. I'll be sure to share it!

LongTailPro is another tool to consider. Not clear yet how much the Google and Penguin updates have impacted it. It's a one-time purchase.

If you do a lot of searches, then then SECockpit could be your best bet, as it collates and summaries a lot of data that you would have to collect manually otherwise. It is server-based so it's awfully fast, and for that you pay a monthly subscription fee.

If you do a lot of searches and want to keep the cost low, complement tools such as LongTailPro with a proxy server, so "friendly" Google does not ban you.

I think its a pain in the ass to click a link and then wait for ms to pull the data then click another link and so on. I read this from another forum that someone referenced, and wondered if you agreed with the usefulness (or lack thereof) of Google's popular keyword too. I don't have historical searches, nor do I notice any difference, but supposedly, GAKWT is not as useful or comprehensive in data search as it once was.

The revolution of search has traditionally been centered on our ability to discover how humans search, the words they use, in what order, the frequency thereof and other subtle semantic permutations. Unless we want to subscribe (in resignation) to Google's dumb-ass shortening of the known language universe, this tool borders on useless. No more will Google's sampling of human queries be easily available just for the asking.

        Thanks for your input guys...

        @TopKat22
did you read the article? i agree with you on the common advice of not believing everything we read. however, the points mentioned and results they've found made me wonder how effective KWT is for genuinely finding highest ranked volume of kw search related to the niche/website you're working with.

that said, what "JSProjects" pointed out about relying heavily on the results of KWT makes sense

        @JSProjects
i wish i could just move along - haha.. i agree that many prolly do rely heavily on G's KWT more than they should (i myself included in the beginning). the challenge is that we may not have the luxury of running up a list of kw's used to find our site if we have no history/traction yet. when entering a new market as a service provider w/a new client, the KWT is one of the tools that kinda help us get started in the right direction. if margin of error is too wide, that could be deterimental to our initial SEO efforts.

        @ThomasHale1986
ya, i know it was 2010 (late 2010), but could be more relevant now than ever nonetheless.

The one thing that seems to at times elude the average marketer is the idea that Google is not a search engine, that is not what they are about.

The fact is that Google first and foremost is a business run for profit.

If you are not on the google radar, all you can hope to do is to glean some crumbs that the large advertisers may leave behind, that is something that you can do, but anyone that does not recognize this fact will find themselves always attempting to bring value to a table that is being setup and used by others.

When I say google radar, that means your a business customer and a big spender at that, what I mean by a big spender is that you spend more than 100,000.000.00 per month, and that might seem like an impossible task for most people, in fact it is, likely that even the top gurus out there in our world do not come close to that kind of advertising budget.

In order for the average Joe or Jane to make a real dent in this world is that you bring something to the table that no one else can, that to say the least in a market saturated with content could be very difficult but not impossible.

The real truth behind Google and its search engines, is that your dealing with a computer, then a human, if you do not recognize that fact again you will eventually find yourself in the place where no good marketer wants to be and that is in the place where they cannot compete with larger and more favored competitors.

What I find to be of great interest is so many products that are designed to deal with google in such a way that has in the past proven to be a failure yet these products are being sold yet today, (automatic backlinks, comment spamming software, blog comments, article marketing, and more every day) some of these are barely logical or even legal, but over all when you fail to see the forest for the trees you need to gain a better perspective else you risk being just another brick in the wall...

In a wall full of other bricks all screaming to somehow get recognized from all the other bricks in the wall.

When you put it all together you can see that there is a method that will work for you but only you can find out what that method is and only you can figure out what this means to you, when you do that you will find out what only few have yet to discover.

There is a pathway to success, but it is not well traveled and in some cases there be serpants...

I use the Google keyword tool all the time, as well as several other tools for keyword research. I think most people's problem is not really understanding what the difference is with the different searches; broad match, exact match and phrase match. Once you understand what the numbers really do represent, then it is a great tool to use.

When i first started, I was guilty of really not having much strategy for using the KWT nor did i have much understanding of the different options (broad, phrase, exact) and how i would use them in my research.

CURRENTLY, this is how i'm using KWT:

I typically search first by broad with my obvious list of kw's for the topic. From that starter list, i add the relevant kw ideas to the starter list.

After i've gathered my broad kw list, I search by phrase & exact...

based on the local volume of phrase AND of exact, i determine what my top 10 kw's or phrases will be to focus on.

as a rule of thumb, if the kw phrase is 3+ words, I'll prolly rely go with the 1-2word rankings in exact list first before i go w/the 3+words ranking.

from that list, I determine my priority of what kw's to focus on.

How do you, Dale, or anyone else, use KWT?

Me personally, I only use the exact match. I do not buy adsense campaigns so the broad match is really misleading and totally useless for me. My research is all for my sites where I want to drive traffic to, so the exact match is the only one that I look at. I know others who rate some importance on the phrase match, but to keep it simple I concentrate on exact match only. That will give you a true honest picture as to how many visitors you have the potential to get to your website, which is all I care about. Again, unless you are running adsense campaigns the broad match is just useless.

As I said earlier I have several keyword tools to find keywords and get a feel for how difficult it will be to rank for. A big plus for me with GKW is the average cost per click. If you have adsense ads on your site, this is critical. Of course you still have to check to be sure google has good ads running for that keyword as well. Again, you have to understand what the average cost per click figure stands for. That is what advertisers are willing to pay google, you will actually get about one third of that. Hope this helps.

Yes, it's dead. Move along now. Kidding.

However, a lot of people rely too heavily on it, IMO. And it tends to be wildly inaccurate at times. I wouldn't use it for much more than a very broad estimation. Best thing to do is just get your site(s) up and running. Over time you'll discover that you're getting traffic for all sorts of terms you've never thought of.

The KWT is still a great research tool. But too many people obsess over finding the "perfect" keyword.

As with ANY keyword tool, getting good results depends a lot in your seed keywords.

I use Google tool everyday, even if it is just to validate my findings with other tools.

Well I don't know...I think that people expect too much from Google KWT. I mean, it would be way too much data to return every single specific keyword, exactly how many times it's been searched, and exactly how many times it's been searched in the past year. Instead they give you broad search counts, phrase search counts, and exact search counts, and between those 3 you can identify how much traffic is long tail and how much matches the phrase.

But even if the keyword tool was totally useless, as was already hit on earlier Google never promised anyone a tool that details the exact search count of every single keyword ever searched in Google. The only thing Google ever promised was to do its very darndest to keep people from manipulating their rankings, and to return the most simultaneously relevant and dynamic results to every single search. I don't think anywhere in there was a clause saying they would do their best to help you make money from their search engine business.

How many other search engines even offer a keyword tool? None that I can think of...But I guess I could be wrong.

I mean, if you want to know how people search, then ask a friend, use your brain, or scrape google related results in combination with the Google keyword tool. No, it's not the most accurate historical data out there, but who cares? I wouldn't call it 'dead' just because it doesn't sync perfectly with what you'd ideally like it to do for your business.

Anyways, I guess that kind of turned into a ramble. Sorry y'all.

      Kindly,
      - Stephen

I think the main problem with the GAKT is the related keywords you get are the ones that they'd really like you to advertise on. So, everyone's being funnelled towards specific keywords.

The trick is to get another source of keywords, like Ubersuggest, or your own referrer logs, and then feed those keywords back into the GAKT to get monthly search volume.

That'll tell you what you want to target.

Ask yourself this: What is Google's biggest moneymaker?

      AdWords

And what tool are we talking about here?

      AdWords Keyword Tool

It was designed for advertisers to provide them with data so they can estimate how much traffic they will receive.

Why on earth would Google wanna make the tool less useful? Because some "internet marketers" decided to use it as keyword research?

i think it's fairly accurate. always use exact searches though. broad is.. well, broad.

Yeah it is but if you're after a good, easy to use keyword research tool then the one I'm currently lovin' is Brad Callen's Niche Finder.

It's a very simple tool designed with the sole perpose of finding you easy to rank for keywords that get traffic every month.

Although I will say if you get excited by spreadsheets of keyword data then I'd go more Market Samurai as it shows you tons more variables etc.

        Hi Alefa,
I have used a couple keyword research tools for a little while now and I recommend using Keyword Evolution if you have trouble with confusing interfaces and procedures but if you are savvy enough you can get off on the right foot with Market Samurai.

Market Samurai is not as user friendly as Keyword Evolution but if you know how to use it correctly it is one of the most effective keyword research tools out there.

Good Luck in finding what you need!

However, the free version is still worth a shot if its only the keyword research section you are after.

I use market samurai, but they just pull information from the google adwords keyword tool.

Be careful with lower exact match search numbers. I have had success with the keywords tools, but recently targeted a KW that market samurai and google said gets 880 exact match local searches per month. I am ranked #2 for that keyword and get exactly zero visits per month. Just a fair warning.

Overall though, the tools are pretty accurate.

(I know the search volume was low for a keyword, but the exact match had an cost per click of over $70, so I thought I could adsense it!)

I am not used to use any of the tool but i prefer the manual research for the keyword. As first find such words that highly entered by people for their query in your field , and then use those words in creation of your keyword. Though in starting , it will take some time to show the results but when you get mastery in assumption of such keyword then you will get more results.

Agreed! Free is great, but if you want a comprehensive tool, then Market Samurai is the best. I was fortunate enough to buy it at a great price when it was introduced on 30DC a few years ago. Made me a few dollars, and it saved me a lot more.

You could always try using ezinearticles which gives 100% consistent results, not sayign you even need to publish anything with them, just save an article as draft and it will tell you exactly what keywords push you over its 4% threshold. If it doesn't then your article/content keyword ratio should be fine. I always guessed ezinearticles set these keyword density thresholds to tie in with Google for a very good reason.

IMO about 1.5 to 2 percent should be fine

Yes but if you overdo kw density, like do 10 percent or something
THEN IT SUDDENLY BECOMES IMPORTANT because google might see that as scammy and deindex you

so to say its not important is a bit of a tossup

It depends on what you mean by "Accuracy".

The reason you'll be getting different results is that keyword density is has two main ways of being calculated.

A=Total occurrences of the keyword phrase in the article
B=Total number of words in the article
C=Number of words in the keyword phrase

            Keyword density calculation 1 uses:
            (A / B) * 100

            Keyword density calculation 2, uses:
            (A * C / B) * 100

Let's have a look at an example and the difference in the keyword density score those two formulas can make.

Let's say we have a article with 1000 words and using keyword phrase of "search engine results page" (4 words) where there are 10 occurrences of that phrase.

So using the first formula, that gives us:

            (10 / 1000) * 100 = 1% keyword density

and using the second formula, gives us:

            (10 * 4 / 1000) * 100 = 4% keyword density

I'm also a fan of the Google Keyword Tool, but also use Google Insights and Google Trends for keyword ideas.

The process I basically use, is to start with Google Insights and type in a keyword I'm looking for, scroll down to the bottom and find rising searches. Copy each of these keywords and use these to enter into the Google keyword tool.

There are many people that aren't a fan of the keyword tool, but this at least gives you an indication.

I also agree with feliciayapsl in relation to market samurai. This also does a good job when it comes to finding the best keywords and they give you access to a whole bunch of videos that show you how to perform each step.

I use both Google Keyword Tool and Wordtracker for Keyword Research.

Wordtracker provides IAAT data for each keyword along with other organic results from search engines. IAAT stands for ‘In Anchor And Title’, in other words it shows how many pages in a search engine’s index include both an HTML Page title that contains the keyword phrase and where the keyword phrase appears in the anchor text of an external link to that page.

Don’t only rely on the Google Adwords Keyword tool for organic keyword research. The High, Medium, and Low Competition data displayed are meant to give you an idea of how many advertisers are bidding for a particular keyword.
So, before targeting any keyword use both Wordtracker and Google Adwords tool to determine the competition for a particular keyword.

I agree with David and Barry, those are effective ways to do keyword research using free resources, which many fail to do so.

Good Point. I don't actually use the Google keyword tool to determine the high, mid and low as these are directly relational to the adwords

I use another method for this.

I use the free Google keyword tool to start, then I use spyfu.com's free option that shows you how many advertisers are bidding for a certain keyword and what they're paying. It's not exact, but it gives you a good idea.

Then I head over to Google and type in the keyword and just see what comes up in the results. How competitive are the sites listed? What's their PR? How hard would it be for me to beat them?

I also look at the ads Google displays in the SERPS to make sure spyfu's tool has given me a mostly accurate snapshot...look at the ads displayed..get a feel for what's going on...

I would like to suggest that research for the keyword manually. As keyword is the word that enter by people for their query results and as per which google show the results with the highlighted word to the query entered and with the quality content. So observe the words that entered highly by people for their search in your field and use those words as in your keyword and provide the best content so this way you will get the better results with the keyword.

It uses googles API to find data, but it just organises it and makes it much easier to sort through and also check the competitions back links etc in one go.

It basically makes choosing a niche much faster. I highly recommend it and no I have no affiliation with them lol.

Well, if you have enough time, you can go to the google keyword tool, and make numerous requestes to make a list of the keywords you need.

If you don't have much time, have a look on paid services, like semrush. It will help you to save your time to get the huge list of keywords.

And the last thing, don't use wordtracker as it rely on 3rd party sites, and their data is very limited.

Market Samurai is 97 dollars purchased before the free trial expires,
          $149 after that

my free trial expired but I just signed up under another email and all kinds of BS until it allowed me to purchase it for the 97 dollars. Not easy by any means because they are sly

but I refused to pay an inflated price.

Before I knew the difference between the searches (exact, broad, phrase) I was making rookie mistakes left and right. I went from what I thought was 2 million searches a month... to 58. Make sure you know the differences between the search options if you are going to use the tool.

No, it's not dead. Really wish people would stop making sensationalistic thread titles(the death of..The end of..Is it really the end?)...if it was dead, it wouldn't still be around and providing value. The only REAL thing dead in the SEO arena these days in Yahoo Site Explorer. Though one could just say that it's gone from the public eye and has now been absorbed into Bing Webmaster tools..

Personally I roll chicken bones and look at the clouds to see what the next best keyword is....

I think this is mentioned so many times but it's worth mentioning again: Keyword research is so important, it's the foundation of any Adsense site building. Select the wrong keywords and you have wasted your time.

2 weeks ago, I stumbled upon a keyword phrase (4 words actually) that has 18,000 EXACT local searches. I repeat: 18,000 EXACT local searches

And, the keyword brings in only 977,000 results. The allintitle: query brings me only 13,000 results. I repeat: 13,000 results in "allintitle:" search

This is a gem isn't it? Although the CPC is only $0.70, the huge amount of searches will make up for it.

So without hesitation, I bought the exact match domain name, setup the blog, whacked in some unique content and SENuked twice.

2 days ago it was ranked 9th position and my Adsense click came in yesterday. About $1+.

So if you find a good keyword, don't hesitate!

Here are the 4 question you must anwser while doing keyword research and forget all myth out there.
      1. Is this buyer's keyword?
      2. What would searchers of this keyword want to see?
      3. How may people are searching this per month?
      4. Is this keyword competition too difficult or worth your time?

        Good points syedakramreviews

        But about point 4,
How will you judge the competition? Everyone have different criteria.

No matter how easy a keyword is, it would always take some effort and backlink building to get your site ranked.
The fact is most of the people do not want to take action or do work.

Trust me on this ppl, there is no magic wand or some secret formula for keyword research.
All it takes some time, common sense and work.

So just pick your keyword and start working on it. Even if you fail to get your site ranked, you will learn something out of it.
If you are ready to learn and improvise, you will eventually start to figure the things out. It takes first hand experience and work to get the real feel of work 'keyword Competition'. You can read thousand of forum posts and threads and can have hundreds of criteria. But all that will be 'theoretical'

Stop reading all the form posts and thread. if you are reading my post (which is on 3rd page of this thread), I assume you read alot... You have more than enough information by now... Start applying it in real....

        Take Action.
99% of times that is the thing which makes all the difference.

      1. Google Insights for Search
      2. Google Trends
      3. Google Adwords Keyword Tool
      4. Google Product Search
      5. Google Correlate

Keyword research is a major task for every SEO expert. Before you start any SEO, you need to find the right keywords for your site and niche. To do this, you use tools, such as the Website Keyword Suggestions tool, or the Keyword Playground tool. These tools suggest relevant keywords with high search volume . i.e. the keywords that makes sense to optimize for.

Which keyword tool you use pretty much depends on what the purpose is:

Are you looking fo keyword ideas?
Are you looking for LSI keywords?
Are you looking to view the amount of competition?
Are you looking to spy on the competition?
Are you looking for average search volumes?

Google's Adwords tool is great for general research. There is a new keyword tool I have been using called Keyword Blaze which seems to overcome the problems with scraping Google that some of the others have been experiencing recently. I picked it up for free as a bonus from another offer I was reviewing but I'm not sure if that's a general offer or not.

As a payed tool I agree with everyone on Market Samurai. It is interesting to me that almost everyone agrees about MS. And about it running slow. I have used Google keyword tool for quite some time and for general work it works great. And of course for anyone without the money to spend it is the standard.

I would test and then compare and see what works for you. We are all different it what we want and can do. So test the product and if it works for you, then go with it. If it doesn't then try something else.

I used MS about 18 months ago and I did think it was good but I remember thinking that the data could not be that accurate. Several completely different terms would yield precisely the same volume of monthly searches in my region. Dont know if its any better now.

I would also be interested to know what the accepted keyword research process is amongst people. I remember wordtracker used to use KEI but this is largely frowned upon. Personally I use search volume and competition levels to evaluate usefulness but ultimately how many terms do people target per page and if they have a PR of 0 against competition with a PR of say 4, how do you gauge which keywords arent worth targeting.
