What's the advantages of an aged domain?

I'm interested in starting an authority niche site in a highly competitive market. What's the advantage of me purchasing an 11 year old PR2 domain versus buying a new domain?

FYI: The aged domain can be purchased for $2,500. Is it worth it?

  • I used to think aged domains mean a lot

    However one of my competitors in my new niche is Domain age 13 yrs
    I see him outranked all the time by newbies on many kws..........and I mean the newbies are less than one year old domain

    So I have come to the conclusion Domain age doesnt count for much

    the newbies who outrank him?
    They have way more backlinks (this 13 yr old site is very poorly backlinked_)

    • The problem is, do too many backlinks to a new domain, and you'll get penalised or de-indexed entirely. It is much safer to make backlinks to an aged domain without getting problems.

  • I really think the age of domains has been severely downgraded in the past few years. Sadly, this is because I had quite a few of them.

    Go with the best possible domain name you can find. Really look for something original.

      Is it just a domain, or website?

      I'd say it's a ripoff, unless the domain itself is worth
      your money to buy it. Domains have worth, but not
      according to age.

      I would probably save myself from spending $2,500.

      Authority sites come in all flavors of domains, from zillow,
      kayak, go, zap2it, etc.

  • $2500 is A LOT!

    Supposedly it should help you with your trust factor. But Google looks after more then 200 elements when considering your ranking so I would advise: save that money for top-notch content and SEO services.

    You should give up the old domain it is nothing wrong with new domain. just becarefull from the blast from automatic softwares.

    • Is the aged domain ranked well? Backlinks? If so, there is definitely an advantage there. Sure, after 6 months the advantage dwindles but a 20 day or 60 day site is not going to rank as well as an aged site.

      Worth $2500? Too many unknowns to say for sure either way. One question though, how much do you think you can make per month from it?

  • I don't think aged domains play a huge factor. Their age reflects a long history of back-links - and that's what matters more.
  • Impossible to know but for SEo not likely. Does it have income? Traffic?

    How long has it been INDEXED? (not merely the age of the domain). Sounds pathetic if its really been around 11 years and only a PR2. You could get pretty close to a hundred PR2s for that.

    • Age domain will always have their own benefits versus the new domain it will definitely help you in ranking.
  • Old domains are good to work. You can easily rank them on your targeted keywords.

    • Domain age has nothing to do with "outranking". I was once a believer of "domain-age-is-a-big-factor" myth before. But when I started seeing few months old sites outranking them, I was awoke from that clueless myth.

      So I think spending that amount is way too expensive. Like I said, you can possibly outrank even a 10 year-old site with a website that is not too much expensive and not that old.

    I regularly buy aged domains, and find them useful. But since I pay about $30 for a 5 year old domain with some backlinks, I would move on from such a price very, very quickly.
  • I think an aged domain has SOME benefit over a brand new domain, since after a few months google with give a new domain SOME more juice as compared to a brand new domain

    however thats not worth 2500 bucks
  • I think it's very good at first, but then it doesn't makes much of a big difference. It will help on busting your site at birth time.

  • On a related subject, if you buy a new domain, does it really affects for how many years you pay and reserve it? if i pay for 5 years at once would it increase my seo over paying for one year???
  • while age plays ONE role with rankings, i think its overall impact is neglectible. An established domain HAS benefits (no doubt about it!) but it doesn't need to be 11 years old with PR whatever....in fact a site 6 months - 1 year old CAN already rank very well.

    I personally wouldn't bother with spending money on a 10 year old domain for ranking purposes.
  • you can buy a high pr old age domain (less than $2500) with alots of backlinks and do a 301 redirect to your new domain.
  • I honestly don't think it has a large effect on your search engine rankings.

  • There is absolutely no benefit to an aged domain. If the domain is a four letter word or short word domain than the value is definitely there. Is the domain a specific keyword that is searched a lot? There is a reason why it is $2500 but it cannot just be the age of the domain. Otherwise I would of had a fortune of aged domains at this price.

  • Aged domain is good for your SEO works, more or less. But it is not so important, yeah, the point is the quantity of backlinks can't be too much for a new domain.
