if you are moderating comments and the backlink comes with a meaningful comment to the post on your blog, then sure, why not...

but opening it up to everyone to post at their will probably get a lot of spam comments on your posts...

I agree with this. If comment is adding to discussion, it's okay for people to leave backlinks. If comment is spam, delete it.

This is what I do too.

It is good to have regular comments coming into your blog but ensure they are actually real and not spammed Scrapebox rubbish for the sake of building links.

Also, turn on nofollow for comments as you don't want a 'vote' going out to any third party site without you knowing what it is about.

It depends. I will allow only genuine poster. After getting thousands of spams, you can easily detect which are genuine and which are not.

I agree with this one, I approve about 1% of comments since most are terribly spun and completely unrelated. Don't see how people stick with these auto-publishing blog commenting software, I mean, if it DOES get published chances are it's a newbie that will just cancel the site's subscription within a year, backlink gone. Just my opinion.

It is pointless to allow backlinks. All it does is bleed out your own pagerank.

I don't care how relevant the comment is, if they link out to something non-relevant, then I will allow the comment, but I strip out the URL.

Now if someone leaves a comment with a link pointing to some article to back up their argument, I'll leave the link. That is the only case.

Now and then if it is someone who leaves comments regularly, I may throw them a bone and leave in a link.

If they are leaving a relevant comment and the link is also relevant, than I allow it. However if they are using the typical one liner comments and using a keyword for their name I pretty much don't let it through. You can usually test what is a legit comment and what is basically spam.

I agree with others. If the comment is genuine and adds value, then why not....

However, some comments are obviously just designed for the link. For example, the other day I got a comment on a post on my SEO site. He said he was new to all of this and might try the suggested technique. But his signature told a different story as it linked back to his well established SEO site.

Another example, I have a site where I share Fiverr and sites like it. I have had people post comments with their sites and ebooks on Fiverr. I am fine with that unless they make a comment like - "Should I try Fiverr?" and they have a link that goes to their gig on Fiverr.

So yeah, honest comments that add value are good. BS comments and spam ones are not. You have to also be careful about the neighborhoods your sites llink out to - so watch that also.
