Adwords question. Can someone help me with this???

Over the weekend i have put up a google ad that focuses on 1 keyword that according to the kw tool only gets 590 exact searches a month.

Here's what it says so far for today.

Impressions = 720 (yesterday was 736)

Clicks = 17

CTR = 2.36

For the time being i'm not worried about clicks or ctr as im just trying to figure out the traffic potential for this keyword.

Now this bit confuses me, if i'm getting 720 impressions a day, 720 (impressions) x 31 (days in a month) this keyword appears to be getting 22320 a month instead of 590 reported by the keyword tool.

Have i done this right? if i have then why is the gkt so wrong :confused:

    Are you looking at local search in your analysis?

    Broad or Exact?

    Have you deselected UK in the keyword tool? Are you looking at international traffic?

    Hi there,

    There are a few things you need to look at.

    Firstly, you've probably got your keyword set to "broad" match, which means your ads are appearing not only when someone types in your exact keyword, but also keywords closely related. For example if your keyword is "orange picnic tables", then there is a chance your ads will appear for searches such as "picnic areas in hawaii". To fix this, simply set your keyword to "exact" match by placing [] each side of it (e.g. [orance picnic tables]).

    You should also check to make sure you've got the right geo-targetting settings, as you might be targetting a larger area than intended.

    Also, keep in mind that the keyword tool is really only a guide... it can sometimes be very inaccurate!

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers.

    Hi. google keyword tool says 590 pm "exact" local searches for UK. 3600 global.

    I have set the gkt location to "united kingdom" in the options as well.

      You are obviously bidding on the broad version of that keyword.

      It's much more rare that someone types as their search query an 'exact' version of a keyword, they always type the broad version.

      Since you are bidding on the broad version, that's why you're getting so many clicks and impressions.

      If you were bidding on the exact version you wouldn't be getting hardly any.

      I recommend not bidding on broad keywords because your Ad can be displayed to a very broad and untargeted audience compared to phrase or exact match. This means a lower conversion rate and lower CTR across the board.

      Hope this helps.

        Thanks for the replies.

        Seems i was was bidding on the broad version after all.

        I always select exact in the GKT but I didn't realise that I had the option to set the keywords to "phrase" or [exact] in adwords as well.

        lesson learned.
