Question about pagerank

Okay, so everyone says that it is best to get backlinks from high pagerank sites and that's what I've been trying to do.

I am using seoquake as a tool. When I visit this one website, on their homepage it says the pagerank is 4, but when I click to another page on their website (their blog section) to leave a comment, is has a question mark for the pagerank.

    This is a fact marketers find very hard to understand. Page Rank is exactly that PAGE rank. Pages receive page rank, not websites.

    A website's home page may have a high page rank, but any articles, blog posts, etc., etc. will be on a PR-0 page when they are first added. This may improve over time if that page becomes extremely popular, but the chances are, it will always remain PR-0.

      Not necessarily true.

      If it's on a CMS then there's a good chance it'll be part of the internal linking structure and get PR just from that right away.

    AnniePot is correct. PageRank is given to individual pages not entire domains. The home page and the post you visited are different pages and will have different PageRank.

    Find those pages that have high PageRank that you can comment on and you should get yourself a nice backlink.

    These Warriors are all correct! This is what I have to add to the conversation:

    If you want your domain to get ranked with a PR, you should have a static home page instead of an ever-changing blog so that you will get a PR for that page.

    There is a lot of opinion and confusion over PageRank, not least because it ultimately comes down to educated guesses, because Google doesn't reveal exactly how it figures it out, or how important it is.

    Having said that ...

    I believe it is best to get a backlink from an actual page with high pagerank, rather than just a low pagerank page within a high pagerank domain. A PR0 within a PR8 domain will carry more power/juice (all other things being equal) than a PR0 within a PR5 domain, but personally I'd prefer to have a link from a PR4 within a PR4 (or 3 even) domain than the PR0 within the PR8 any day.

    You shouldn't be seeing a question mark (do you click it, to reveal the PR?), but rather anything from PR n/a through PR0 to PR10.

      That makes no sense - how do you work out that one PR0 page gives more than another PR0? by definition they're the same.

        It makes some sense. What he is saying is that getting a link from a higher authority site will be much more valuable than a link from a lower authority website.

        It's just like getting a link from ezinearticles when you submit an article compared to posting an article on a website with a pr2 domain. Both articles that are just posted will be pr N/A because they wouldn't have been ranked as yet. However, the link from ezinearticles will have much more power given that ezinearticles is a pr6 domain.

        I hope that clears up the confusion.

        It is as yesacpow has said. It is because the domain itself gives a certain authority to a backlink, no matter which page it is on within that domain. So, having a comment within a PR8 domain is better than having in a PR2 domain ... again, if everything else is the same.

        Like I put in my original post though, all of these kinds of things are only speculation, but it is widely accepted that this is the case and is the basis on which most link selling services (like Angela's) sell their links.

          This also applies to signature links buried under several threads ..leave about pages, but still are indexed and have a positive impact on your SERP.

    I will suggest not to spend too much time on this. It is better off to just include whatever backlinks (good) you can find. Be it dofollow, nofollow, High PR or low. Diversity is good. Google has became smarter and smarter. May not be worthwhile the effort to try and game it. Focus on long term - gain real backlink juice by giving good content to reader.

    Why exactly are you bothered about PageRank? PageRank has no bearing on the ranking of a website for a given search term, so from an SEO point of view is relatively useless. If you’re interested in selling links to advertisers however, PageRank is of use because many media buyers and amateur SEOs believe that PageRank is the be all and end all – of course they’re wrong, things such as relevance are FAR more important when acquiring links from websites.


    So… why are you even concerned with PageRank?

    Page rank is only given for a specific page of a website. Not the entire website. So do not bother with this one pal.

    If you are going to find the high PR of the individual pages where you can comment then you will end up with a few or sometimes none depends upon your niche. If you want to care, check if the page offers dofollow links or not.
