Adwords Strategy Question?

I see two different schools of strategy in adwords - and would love your insight...

One is to go in, bid high, get high clickthrough and then start bidding down.

I just got off the line with Google on one of my accounts - he hinted about 3 times that there was no reason I should be getting high CPC like I was - except I had bid high - and Google is happy to take it.

The other strategy is to aim for position 3-5 then work on improving the ad > landpage > ad circle.

I was a believer in strategy #1 until my last campaign and the chat with Google.

Your thoughts?

  • I would say you should split test them.Create two campaigns to test both and pick a winner.When it comes to PPC there is no one method that works all the time.But high bid works mostly works since Google wants you money.

      And assuming two equally tightly themed campaigns/adgroups - Is it better to bid high and drift down - or aim for 3-5 position and improve performance?

      Especially since Google announced in October that they are going to start discounting high bid strategies to get high CTR for higher quality, lower bid words?
  • I have recently learned that google plays a lot of weight in your landing page, assuming you are not direct linking? Your landing pages needs 5 -8 pages of linked original content, not just swiped stuff. This original content needs to be changed every week to keep the bots happy. You need links at the bottom of your page like: resource, privacy, contact us to show you are a real business. google does not like thin 3 page landing pages and it's a great idea to link to .edu and .org authority sites. UTube vidoes do well for content as well. Another thing to do is to create long tail keywords that you can bid very low on. sample: your selling a workout program: "best workout program for women after given birth" for example. google will not accept a keyword over 10 words long.


    Just sharing the power of knowledge...which is only powerful when given away.

    • Interesting - i've got the privacy policy page link at the bottom....

      But I've found that when I put other links on my squeeze landing pages it kills my response/opt-in rates. I've thought about changing the colors of the links so they can't be seen - but have been told that Google is all over that and will spank ya hard if you are caught doing it.

      I can hook a blog onto the site and link to that I suppose - I just hate doing it because of past hits on opt-in rates.
