300+ visitors a month but CTR is 0.35%

I started a blogger blog in 2009 writing tutorials within finance topics - mostly aimed at college students and small business owners who wanted to know more about the fundamentals. To attract visitors, I joined various "homework help" type forums and posted answers and solutions and in the process creating some very high quality backlinks to my blog. For certain long tail keywords, I rank on the first page (positions 2 or 3).

At present, I receive anywhere from 250 to 400 visitors a month - depending on the time of year (more visitors when school is in session). The problems I have are my bounce rate is nearly 90%, my CTR is 0.35% and my visitors don't bother exploring other tutorials / articles I've written.

This is again a blogger blog. I was hoping that warriors here can advise me on things I can do to improve my stats. I've been searching for a high CTR theme for blogger but havent had any luck. Any insight would be tremendously appreciated. Thanks.

Can you install google analytics on blogger? You would be able to see what "keywords" your visitors are using to find your blog, then expand on the keywords.

I already have analytics. The problem is CTR and bounce rate. I was hoping there were some good themes for blogger that would address these issues. Thanks for the reply.

Well are the keywords that are bringing your visitors to your page relevant? It sounds like they are not hence why they are backing out of your site straight away

I was wondering if you have any testimonials on your site, and also what kind of pitch you had on the website to keep them there. Maybe you need to upsell the intellectual property in your articles with a statement like - If you want to skip the mistakes and save thousands of dollars starting a business, just take 5 minutes and read these articles. I know it is cheesy, but experiment to make them stay on the site. There is an experiment tool on adwords where you can switch your website around and they track your conversions to find the best material for your site.

What kind of call to action have you got going on with this blogger blog?

Are you serving up some decent information leading up to that call to action?

How are you getting your traffic and how targetted is that traffic?

BTW, 400 visitors a month isn't a whole lot. That's one or two days for some of my sites. jUst sayin'...

Agreed, also, I have a similar thing going on, although over 10x the visitors, CTR is the same, and a bounce rate between 65-72%. Like you, I answer a lot of common questions that other sites in the industry won't bother with, all about my niche and nothing else.

For example explanations and comparisons of motorcycle tech specs like air cooled vs. liquid cooled, disk brakes vs. drums, and other things people look up when they're looking to buy a motorcycle but don't understand the meaning of.

My info caters directly to my niche, is very keyword oriented, ranks well, and is very unique. But bounce rates are high (72%)

How I fight this: On the longer pages, I split the stories in two. If readers are interested in what they're reading, they need to click Next to read the rest of it. For me this drops a page's bounce rate down to the 20s-40s.

So try to divide your posts, if you have good content people want to read you will get that second click. If you don't, your problem is probably in your content.

Impossible to comment without seeing the Blog or the content.

Now if you determine your content is good, your (my) next question is probably: How do I get them from only being interested in the subject/topic they came to my site for ---> to wanting to see what else my site has to offer them?

I'm trying stuff like Related Posts, links within the articles, not having a whole lot of success. You?

There is a lot of factors that could be the cause of such a low CTR.

First your traffic is so low you're only getting about 10 visitors a day. You need to work on promoting your blog more so readers will recommend your blog to their friends or classmates.

That brings me to adding social buttons so people can easily share your tutorials.

Also are your headlines of your tutorials catchy? Do you have something like "Learn how to make money" or "Discover the secret methods to making your own ATM". Which one would you click on?

Have your tutorials linked together not just on the navigation. Under your first tutorial have a section on the bottom saying "Related Tutorials".

Also be honest with yourself are your tutorials high-quality? Most visitors don't read other articles or come back to your site if your content is trash. So have other people give you honest constructive criticism about your site.

    common factors for bounce rate:
CATCHING your viewer. if they read the first paragraph, they're WAY more likely to read the rest of what you have to offer. people deal with a lot of garbage, so if it seems like garbage in the beginning, they will assume that it is and stop reading in order to preserve their time

PROFESSIONALISM. be someone that they are sure that they can trust.

MATCHING TRAFFIC. you don't want traffic, you want to match traffic with what's valuable to them. if you have 300 visitors a month but you have a 90% bounce rate, hey, lets be serious, you have about 30 real visitors a month. .35% ctr suddenly becomes a 3.5% ctr - still not so great for $ for time return, but if you've got big conversion numbers 3.5% will pay rent (obviously not in this case but you get my point)

if you're having these problems, i would hazard to guess that you have a weak grounding in marketing with a strong grounding in the internet, especially if you're getting decent traffic. focus on marketing and professionalism, it's not called "internet get views", its called "internet marketing"

I think it is the problem about the target traffic to your site. You should adjust your keywords with most relevance. Thus you will get the target visitors with high CTR.Of course, your article content must be interesting and attractive

You should throw the ads right in their face. A large rectangle block like BOOM so they can't miss it. I increased my ctr from 2.5% to 8% that way.

My advice to you is to buy a domain and hosting, this way your business will have more value..

Not surprising. Most "students" don't want to click any ads.

Actually I don't know anyone in real life that would actually "want" to click on an ad.

So you need more traffic and better ad placement most likely.

Your visitor demographics are tech savvy young students, that probably has adblocker installed on their browser or otherwise do not like to click on ads. That's probably the reason why you are seeing low CTR.

    Then what about mine?
My blog gets on an average 650 page views each week, with 94.81% New and 5.19% Returning visitors. But the Bounce Rate is 91.62%, more miserably CTR now dropped to only 25% :O.
Probably I'm doing fatal mistake in ad placing. So, please anyone review my blog (in my Sig) and give me your precious advice.
    Thanks

Your site looks like a hotdog stand. Red, white, yellow, random ads here and there. Ahhh!! lol

Fine something that matches your product... you blog about iphones... iphones aren't red or yellow, few are white... try something that goes with the theme you're talking about. My first impression of your site is "this is not an iphone site, I'll just hit back and see what else google recommends". Clean it up and bounce rate will drop. The more time people spend on your site, the more likely they are to click.

Thanks a lot man. You have made some point clear to me. I think I've to make it more Authority alike on that genre, right? I'll try to do it and will ask for your review again.
By the way, would you please make some suggestions on the Ads pattern thus they'll look more natural and get more click?
You can PM me also regarding it.
