Google can be strange

Google may not be as smart as they think... or maybe the algorithm has a sense of humor.

I have a certain plug in that alerts me to key words I'm ranking for and it kept alerting me of how well I was ranking for something that had nothing to do with anything in my site.

I also use a few of those automatic tagging programs (they can be a little annoying sometimes) and it apparently tagged a series of posts with the name of a rapper and his song lyrics (I had never heard of either).

This was going on for weeks, where I kept ranking #2 or #4 or whatever for this search term.

What bothered me was that it was totally unrelated to anything I've ever written about and I don't like misleading people.

But, then I did a little research and found this term had around 9000+ local searches a month.... wow.

So, in spite of ethics and loyal readers (who were about to be really confused), I wrote a really good post around that keyword. I'm a great writer, and I know what I'm doing... so bear with me.

The next day, the SERP is on page 2 for the same term.

Ever since then (and I'm sure I did everything correctly), the ranking for that keyword has gone down (probably on page 2/3 now.

I don't really care. But it's really funny and shows how weird Google can be. Like when a site that is not even close to as good or relevant as mine ranks higher???

Sorry for my rant.

  • Very interesting.. Not sure what Google think but it sometimes make me crazy...
  • I wonder if Google has a "super agent" on this forum to collect data (like this post) and report back to headquarters... think it's possible?

    • Did you look at the competition for that keyword. Probably it did not have anything better to show?
  • It would be interesting to do further research by deleting the post you made and see if you recover to the higher rankings?
  • Do you have any theories as to why it happened? Your experience is very intriguing to me, I would have thought you would get a solid top rank, unless competition moved in and got good backlinks out of it when you maybe did not? You obviously know your stuff, I would have done the same thing to keep traffic coming from something like that. Maybe Google took your bounce rate into account for that page?
