SEO and duplicate content

Does anyone else believe that duplicate content can add quality to a site? Suppose you make a site on a specific subject and want to add as much quality as possible for your visitors, then you could research only the best quality content on the subject (articles, photos, videos, etc.) so your visitors are happy because they do not have to do all that research themselves. Then, they are more likely to bookmark your site and share it since they know it's a big hub of information rather than a "5 articles" website.

I'm not concerned about ranking the duplicate content here, but whether having pages on your domain with duplicate content can lower your chance to rank the other pages of the same website with original unique content?

From what I read it's hard to tell. I have seen people claim that any dupe content on your site will penalize every page of your site while others say that it increases the size of your site and helps you become an authority site.

What do you think?

  • Do not use the duplicate content on your site for your internal linking structure. Although you can run the articles section in your website to let website up to date.

      It won't lower anything. There is some "penalty" for
      duplicate content, but that's not what they refer to.

      But when I say it won't lower anything, it won't make
      for a good experience, as you are just providing the
      same stuff as elsewhere. Not helping and hurting are
      two different things.

      HOWEVER,
      If you have your site set up to be a unique experience,
      that gives value to your visitor, then there is no
      reason why it can't be ranked (if that's possible in
      the first place) for a stand alone site.

      Lyric and porn sites do this stuff all the time And they
      rank, get high PR, etc. Many higher than the original
      page. Blogs do this as well.

  • It won't really hurt as long as it's your own to begin with and has been published from the exact domain. However, keep it original content.

    • I agree with MikeTheBuilder. Lets say you place a unique piece of content on your site and it gets ranked. You start getting traffic and people like your content, so they decide to copy it and share it on their own site. Is this your fault? Will Google penalize you? Nope! You can not control this, its just the nature of the internet.

  • you can`t rank a page with duplicate content. google just won`t put it in the first page...

  • Google simply filters URLs from search results with duplicate content. But you can acoid this by linking to the real source of information with due credit.

    Also, it would be good if you could rephrase the text by keeping the information intact.

    And, they say, there is no penalty ofr duplicate content but its very difficult to rank with duplicate content.
