Honestly,

The solution I go back to time and time again is a simple text editor. There is something about being able to quickly write code that a wysiwyg editor can't compete with.

That is a vague question. What kind of site do you want to build?
Blog? I would say use word press.
Ecommerce for selling actual items? I like opencart.
A site with ALL the bells and whistles? Dreamweaver.
Nice site with the ability to customize? I like wysiwyg.

Kompozer (Komposer?) is basically an Open Source version of Dreamweaver, or so I understand. Since it's Open Source it's free and receives regular updates with new features from the community working on it.

Personally, I just use Notepad++ for the most part. Then again, I'm not actually creating websites from scratch most of the time but rather editing some HTML files here and there.

If you are just wanting to design a website (and not code it) I would have to say Photoshop.

For converting the design to html / php etc, I would say Dreamweaver unless you understand html, css, php or what ever language you are developing in, then I would have to say nothing beats a good text editor (SublimeText is currently my text editor of choice).

Dreamweaver is the best for a static website.
Drupal is the best for a dynamic one -- it's very SEO friendly, very flexible (you can handle such layouts and data manipulations with it that in WordPress are unthinkable, and has all kinds of additional free modules available (even a full scale online shop, added seamlessly to your other pages).
But, as always, the best have their drawbacks: Dreamweaver is not free and Drupal's learning curve is quite high -- you may want to use SeaMonkey or WorPress instead.

As the folks above have said, it's something of a broad question.

There's usually a few components that go into website creation as a whole, and even if you use only one most of the time, you're probably still going to need the rest eventually.

Here's my personal lineup:

Graphic design: Photoshop

Custom coding: Dreamweaver (I use for html, css, php, javascript and I find it better than a text editor due to its auto completion and syntax coloring features.)

FTP: FireFTP for Firefox

Content Management: WordPress

And for WordPress theme creation I use my own application.

It really does depend on exactly what you're aiming to do, but after about 12 years building websites the above has emerged as my dream team.

Was loyal to Dreamweaver for years, then got a
copy of Xsite Pro and have been using it since.

As someone already mentioned, it all matters on the
purpose of the site.

Depending on your needs you may find Xsite Pro
to be a better option than Wordpress and vice
versa.

Heck, if you are just building a simple static site
you could get away with Weebly (love it by the way).

Dreamweaver is and always has been wed designers #1 choice.

I also have XSitePro and couldn't recommend it more! Incredible.

Wordpress? You kidding me? That's a CMS system. NOTHING to do with "web design" definition.

I'm astounded that so many are recommending Dreamweaver. And to say its industry standard is nonsense. I've worked in two studios and worked with a lot of professionals, and nobody used it. I use TextMate on a Mac, I've also used Coda. On Windows I have used Notepad++. The live view is a joke as it doesn't display like other browsers, and the earlier versions weren't even W3C compliant. It produces code you don't need, it has features you will never use and it takes up a lot of computer resources compared to less complicated text editors. It doesn't teach you the language, it writes it for you if you use the WYSIWYG editor, and if you use it as a plain text editor then its a lot easier to understand a simple text editor. Go onto Sitepoint and have a read about this topic. It's a debate that will go on and on and there is no right or wrong, but as you tell I dislike the program and prefer to code by hand. Each to their own tho

These days its pretty typical to note which CMS you use. It's important in design because, if you get an employee who isn't used to working with your CMS, then it don't matter how good he is at web design. You'll have to devote a month to teaching him.

Thats just nonsense. Do you think its the only way to build a website? Or the only CMS? lol

Trust me, it would be quicker to build a plain html site from scratch, than it would be to learn how to use Wordpress first and then build one.

This is not the question....... And Wordpress is a content management system not a webdesign software.

If he going to learn to code CMS's he needs to learn PHP programming.....

No university teaches for web design how to code in php, unless you sign up for php programming or you sign up to learn how to code websites using php.

Either way, this is not what the OP wanted.

Knowing how to work with Wordpress, does not make you a webdesigner at all.....

Knowing how to code a wordpress theme from scratch and how to skin it graphically because you took graphic design and web design would be the best way to go..... for sure.....

But that is something you have to be trained at, it does not happen over night, and again has no bearing on the OP question... in my humble opinion....

I would say dream weaver is number one. Have used it for many years. Always want to learn new tricks, but it keeps on growing. Flash is made by the same company. Thus the two are great to create your web pages. Problem is that they are so expensive.

That would be the plugin that isn't displayed in iDevices that form a large portion of your traffic? Go into your Analytics and see how many are using iPhones and iPads, and this doesn't display on their devices.

I've been designing websites for 14 years, if you think you have to use Wordpress you have been badly advised or are reading nonsense. In fact, most database driven sites I've seen use a bespoke platform or something that costs money. Wordpress has its place no doubt about it and I use it a lot. But to say if your not a theme designer your dead is comical.

I made my first web page in 1996. Statistically most websites don't have a database at all. Of the ones that do have a CMS, the majority run WordPress. But i recommend everyone reading this NOT learn WordPress - so there's less competition for me. Booyaaaaa

So we both have the experience then. And I agree that most websites won't use CMS. The majority of people that ask for websites now want a way to edit the websites themselves, which is where these free CMS systems come into play. No one wants to pay an ongoing fee to a designer for the upkeep of the site, so a CMS is useful to be able to let them manage it themselves. One of the studios I worked for years ago had a CMS system that blows Wordpress out of the water. It was written completely in-house by some programmers, was incredibly intuitive and was used exclusively on all the sites which were hosted on their own servers. Wordpress has filled a gap in the market to let Joe Public build a site themselves as long as they accept there is a learning curve. People just don't want to pay what a proper website costs now as they see these $99 Wordpress sites. That is half the reason I am now full time IM as I got tired of all the hassle of offline clients.
