SEOSpyglass question - Difference between external links and total links?

Hi I just downloaded the free version of SEOSpyglass after reading some positive reviews of the product.
As for my question, when I check for backlinks of a site, I see two columns i.e external links and total links and I cant figure out the difference between the two.
I've gone through the tutorial video of SEOSpyglass on link-assistant.com and this is what is said by the presenter.
External links- "shows you the total number of outbound links on the webpage that is linked back to your competitor..."
Total links - "show you the total number of links on the webpage that is linked back to your competitor. This is calculated as the total number of outbound links plus all the internal links on the webpage linking back to your competitor..."
I'm relatively new to SEO so both these sound the same to me.
SEOSpyglass shows a webpage and shows 63 external links next to that. Does that mean the competitor has posted his link 63 times on that webpage?
