It really depends on your niche and how strong the competition is.

Many people say, you have to keep building links or the competition will beat you, but I have to disagree with that statement. I have sites that I haven't touched in months that are still ranking at the top of Google for numerous keywords.

Of course, if you are after very competitive keywords and see the competition for them is constantly adding new content and getting more links, then you have to keep up or your site will get down the SERPs.

But if you target a keyword for which your main competitor only has a few hundred links to his site, then it's very probable you could beat him after a few weeks or months of consistent work and then maintain your rakings without doing anything.

Backlinking to me is a constant thing that is never ending, now I don't start backlinking any site I don't think I'm going to backlink to indefinitely, even If I sell one of my sites I'll recommend to the new owner to keep feeding the site new links every day, the day's of "doing a blast" are gone, if you want to rank high and stay there you need to keep a constant flow of link juice coming in, otherwise you're competitors who do will outrank you and you'll slowly fall down the ladder.
