Generally you get what you pay for, I wouldn't bother with the free press release sites if you're looking to have any material impact on your site, they're spammed to death with a lot of crap, the real news sites you have to pay to get on....

Get the $20 package from webwire .com

Using free services are a waste of time in most cases. You can get tons of syndication for $20. I've never submitted a press release that didn't directly pay for itself with the traffic it generated, regardless of the value of the backlinks.

Which makes me question why I don't submit a lot more press releases!

prlog.org is the best for free PR

If you go paid, search for the press releases of your competitors or the big guys in your niche. There are niche-specific press release/news websites out there that can deliver more targeted results than a general/all topics website.

For example, Hottest Anime News & Rumors | AnimeShinbun (for all things anime)

It's a non-traditional news website that you can publish your news on in a digg-like way.

If you can do paid, hit up PRWeb's $200 package so you can set your anchor text. Normally ends well whenever I do it.

Here is a large list of sites you can submit your press release to free of charge: Submit Press Releases

I have had moderate success with PRWeb for paid releases.

I have always used PRlog to backlink to new posts on my blog as part of a strategy which both creates traffic and creates backlinks. Worth a try.
