Meta description and keywords

I found out about this site a couple of weeks ago and I have been doing lots of reading and wanted to thank you guys for all the input you have given..

I have two questions:
1) How important are meta descriptions? When someone searches on google for a keyword, does google look at your meta description or all the content on your website? When he searches a certain keyword that is on your website but not on your meta descriptions, will he find your site?

2) Are meta keywords important and why?

Thanks,
Elie

They are not as important as they used to be. You can get ranked for keywords that are not even listed in your meta keywords. Google places more emphasis on backlinks as opposed to meta keywords and description.

Over the past few years, I've experimented with different strategies for the META Description Tag. I've settled on one which I feel has been of the most benefit. I will typically build the META Description utilizing content from the first one or two paragraphs on the page.

To google quality backlinks are more important for your site.Only backlinks can change your site's rank alone. On page seo has lost his importance largely.

Definitely desciption is served as snippets of webpage page in search engines. Keyword tag is not important if you want to secure your ranking in google.

To all those people saying it's not important, that's just wrong.

Certainly meta keywords isn't important as Google ignores them and other search engines place little to no importance on them.

    BUT

Meta description is very important, as it serves two purposes:

    1. Helps your onpage SEO, if you have your keywords in the description.

    2. Can help get more click throughs to your site if you make the description compelling as that's what is generally displayed in the search results (note that Google will sometimes pick an excerpt from your content instead of the meta description if it deems your content to be more "useful").
