Hi
Would you like to share, how you analyze your competitor internet marketing strategy, which tools online free or software you use for it? And do you change your strategy after analyzing the competitor strategy or not?

  • SEOMoz and Hitwise have some good tools for competetitor analysis but full functionality is not free. The free toolbar from SEO-book is also good for analysis.
  • It all really depends on how you determine competitor analysis. If you mean on the link level I use MajesticSEO.

If you consider all "encompassing" I would use serpIQ to analyse the top 10 and determine overall complexity.
  • The Alexa Toolbar is free and simple to use and provides some rough estimates of keyword performance. Next up is SEMRush. This is also free but a little more complicated.

    • The two tools I would start with are SEOQuake toolbar and Market Samurai. You have to pay for Market Samurai but you get what you pay for. You can see your competitor's backlinks and analyze the top 10 results for any keyword. You can also see your comptitors anchor text links, link PR, number of referring domains, number of referring pages as well as the number of backlinks. You can see if your competitor has their key terms in the title tags, URL, H1 tags.

I never close my copy unless I am updating. Market Samurai is what you need.
  • +1 for SerpIQ
  • I personally hate using free tools just because I have never found a good one that's free. However in the early days I used to use SEOquake and majesticseo to analyze the competition. The niche finder tool found in this forum is pretty basic but a big time saver.
  • If you do not want to pay and do this for free you can try with these tools:
    - mozBar - extension for Chrome from SEOmoz
    - SEOQuake for Chrome (or Firefox I think there is too)
    - SEO Book extension for Firefox
    - ahrefs.com - for checking how many diversity competitors' backlink profile has

I think this is very short list but should be enough for primary analysis

Also you can consider paid tools like:
    - Market Samurai - good for anchor text and PR analysis
    - Long Tail Pro
    - SECockpit
    - SEOmoz PRO
    - RAVEN

    • Till now I have not gone through this condition so I dont have any idea about this.
  • You can use free analysis tools but some of them provide very limited backlinks and some websites show 1000 backlinks..Try this
    opensiteexplorer dot com
  • I use backlinkwatch to check backlinks and anchor text. You can check up to 1000 links. However they are hosted in China so best to use it in USA in daytime when they are asleep as this program has a quota per day and isn't always available.
  • You can use link diagnosis, seomoz or market samurai to know the back-link structure of your competitors; basically it depends on strategy of individual. There are lots of factors which can affect ranking.
  • yeah backlink watch is a good free tool, however some sites don't get any results when you put in the url. I don't know if you should fully trust this source but if you are strapped for cash then this is the way to go.
  • For free tools, Traffic Travis is not too bad.

For paid tools, my preference is for SECockpit as it does a very detailed competition analysis of hundreds of keywords in seconds.
  • I use SEOquake, Alexa Toolbar and backlinkwatch for it.
  • I use keywordspy. But it needs to pay monthly.
