Can I Bring Back An Old Website To Life?

This one website I'm talking about in particular is almost a year old and is one of my very first attempts at creating a website on Wordpress.com.

It has almost 100 pages of solid content and has over 200 backlinks.

My problem with it is it has a EMD but the content isn't about the keywords in the domain. I was going to make a simple Adsense site but it just grew over time.

For example: the url is buypurplehats.com, but the content isn't about just purple hats. It's about say fashion.

Can I still rank this site for a different keyword?

Should I get a new domain name and redirect it to the site?

What do you guys think?

    Hi 3000,

Can I still rank this site for a different keyword?
No, search engines do not rank websites, they rank individual pages. You can get each page to rank for whatever that page is about, don't concern yourself with the notion of ranking the site, that is not how search engines work.

Should I get a new domain name and redirect it to the site?
No, absolutely not, that would be counterproductive. If you want a new site then build a new site. Redirecting a new domain name to an old domain will accomplish nothing as far as SEO goes. Now you could re-brand your existing website it with a new name, just do 301 Permanent Redirects to the new URLs from the old. You will retain about 85% of the original link juice from external links.

      I completely agree with dburk.

Just build new content on the domain, and the new pages will rank for whatever they are about. Your home page might take some time to change it rankings from "buy purple hats" to whatever you're switching to if it has a lot of backlinks with the old anchor text, but the search engines are smart and will make the switch given enough time.

    Yep....
I have re purposed several websites and they both went to page 1 of googel. (and I would have not done it if someone from this forum had not said I could)

    1. Change the title of the site to your new key word
    2. Add a search engine key word optimized home page. I made a new sticky page.
    3. start making supporting articles pointing to that page.
    4. start backlinking to that main page

and now keep an I on the progress...

You could also start building links to internal pages to get them ranking for their respected keywords this seems like the most logical stratergy
