Tip: When Checking Backlinks Try This...

Not sure if this is the same for all tools, but the tools I am using.
(SEO SpyGlass)

Try:

www.mydomain.com

then try

mydomain.com (without the www)

You'll see the backlink checker will see them as two different links.

I did a check on a domain tonight and without the www, it showed 6 backlinks. I rechecked with the www and it showed 336 backlinks.

Just a worthy tip to those backlink checkers out there.

  • Yes, your site will have 2 different domains, one with www and one without. You are essentially splitting your backlinks up and diluting your entire seo plan. Only one of the domains will rank for a keyword, so backlinks to the other version are wasted.

    The way around this is to redirect one of the versions to the other in your hosting account (countless tutorials online)

    What you are seeing is not a cool backlink checking technique, it is a diluted backlink structure.

    Fix this up and it will be beneficial for your rankings.

  • Shouldn't the 301 redirect pass the link juice to the www version? How does this effect SERPs?
