The Myth Of A Buying Keyword - Marketing 101

Somehow this forum has turned the definition of Internet Marketing into making niche websites and ranking them for keywords, and possibly throwing some affiliate links or adsense on it.

Newsflash... That has nothing to do with marketing. That's called making a website and trying to monitize it with adsense or affiliate links.

/rant

Now onto something I don't think many people understand, so I want to offer a little value today.

This applies mostly to affiliate marketing, but could apply to adsense as well.

Want to know what a buying keyword is? It's literally any keyword that has to do with anything about your niche, product, etc.

Here's a real example from my personal life.

I needed to buy a new microphone for my PC because I've been doing a lot of training videos. So naturally I started doing some research. Now I'm kind of a research nut, so I started looking at all sorts of searches.

"how to make my audio sound better when recording videos"
"best PC microphone"
"Improve audio quality during video production"
"PC microphone reviews"
"microphones that sound good with video"

Anyway, I literally spent a week or so researching. I read a TON of garbage. The normal review sites that are built with nothing in mind but getting me to click a link to amazon.

Anyway, here's what I didn't find...

"Free report shows how to improve audio quality for better training videos or podcasts"

Now, just think if I had stumbled upon such a report. I would have certainly opted in and read the report. And if it was good, I would stay on that guys/gals list. And they recommended a microphone in the report, and I thought they were credible, I would have bought it (I had about $150 budget).

But it doesn't stop there. Imagine they continue to talk to me to about the importance of podcasting, doing video via training, webinars, etc. Think of the opportunities they have to continue to market to me...

Here's the lesson...

Anyone who is searching for information on a product/solution is a buyer. Every search is a "buyer keyword". Its just that everyone is at a different point in the buying cycle.

Some are just starting their research. Some are just looking for confirmation before pulling the trigger. Some just want a little social proof. Whatever...

That's why people say the "money is in the list" because you can help all of these people. You can continue to help them solve their problems, build trust and credibility, and sell them products that they will happily buy.

So the next time you're looking for a buyers keyword, please remember you're looking for the wrong thing.

You need to be asking how can I get this person in my sales funnel, and convert them into a buyer by helping them understand what's their best solution.

Anyway... I just needed to get that off my chest. Back to your regularly scheduled programming. "push button money tree software for millions of backlinks" Enjoy it...

I think you vastly overestimate what searchers for products
or info want. The average surfer, that is. The one who will
    come to your page.

My best squidoo lens is one of a product. Amazon sales are through
the roof. It is a buyers page. People come, they buy.

I can't fathom why a buyer would want to plug in an email.
Or want to be bombarded with upsales. Or be interested
in webinars. Or podcasts. Or any other such nonsense.
This aint MLM BS on traffic exchanges. They want a product
to buy, maybe a tad bit of info. Not a bunch of junk that
they have to wade through. If they want that stuff, youtube
    is full of it.

Those of us who do product pages, adsense, etc. are probably
not looking to be lumped with "internet marketing" BS.

I do not consider myself an internet marketer. I tossed that
when I gave up traffic exchanges, safelists, etc.

Nothing wrong with what you're doing obviously, and like I said this has more to do with actual marketing.

But there is a very proven cycle to a person making a decision to buy. If you're only capturing those folks that are at the end of the cycle, you're missing out on a huge opportunity.

Again, nothing wrong with it, but like I said, it's not marketing. It's monitizing websites. (I do the same with a lot of my sites, so it's not a holier than thou thing).

But imagine if you have a review site on razor scooters that is awesome. And you're collecting email addresses along the way... And now you can market helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, etc. to people who need them.

      Anyway, just my $.02

Also, I think you misunderstood my point above. I didn't say anything about an upsell, webinar, or podcast. I was simply pointing out that I had a specific need for a better microphone because of video training I was doing. But had some given me some great advice (because I'm an idiot when it comes to it) as my business grew my needs would change. And they could be there to answer my questions when I need to take it to the next level.

For example, I settled on a $20 logitech microphone which is working fine for now. But lets say I need to do extremely professional videos, or voice over work. I might need a better microphone. If I had a go-to expert they could easily recommend me a better set up, provide me a link, and make a commission.

      That's what I was saying.

This has nothing to do with your thread so I apologize before hand for the thread jack.

Your video on keyword research is probably one of, if not THE best I've seen when it comes to using free tools. In fact, the method is probably better than what I've seen for most paid keyword research tools as well. I'm always watching these types of videos as a general interest.

I decided to try your method on a very competitive niche and was able to scout close to 30k in keywords in less than 15 minutes and narrowed it down to 9 of the longest tail keywords which are pretty easy to rank for and have search volumes of between 2500-8300 searches per month and CPC of 4-6 dollars. And that was just the longest tail keywords. If I wasn't stuffing my face with Thai food at the moment I would check the others out as well.

    Kudos on a great video.

I have to agree with that statement. His keyword research approach is also the best one i have come across to date. Awesome stuff and extremely valuable.

Good sharing. Tough I'm still in "website monetizing" period, I've done list building work for more than a year, and I do send them some special offer on holidays, it works fine so far. I want to be a retailer in 2012, so I'm working on searching proper products and list building now. Any details about how to make more valuable searches become customers on my list?

Good luck! Actually selling stuff, what an idea...

My point was depending on what you're trying to do with your site, a buying keyword can be totally different than the traditional definition.

I understand where you're coming from. And I know that email marketing works. And works well. But, in my opinion, it would take far too much time to manage everything. Especially if you're going to interact with subscribers 1 on 1. Too much time and effort for a simple affiliate sale.

If you're targeting the right keywords, then your average surfer is really just looking for that extra nudge. That's where we come in. I know that my "marketing" mind tells me that these aren't the greatest sites in the world. But the average person doesn't care too much.
