Spread some articles at the high PR society network, works as a charm.

    • Just keep doing more of what you've been doing. If you've managed to get to number 5 then you're doing the right thing. Just keep it up now.

  • You should also check out your competition and see the number of backlinks they have using a backlink tracker Backlinks Checker Tool - Backlink Watch You'll have an idea of the likelihood of you overtaking them. Of course, many other factors go into this, but it's good to know what you're working towards
  • If you track all the links the #1 position has and duplicate it yourself and of course add some extra links from other high PR sites it goes a long ways towards taking the #1 position.
  • You should make diversity of backlinks and build more more backlinks to current backlinks(Web 2.0 and Articles)
  • Try doc share or video sites backlinks.
  • It depends on your domain age.

The new google update prevents ANY new websites to rank #1, so you need 301 redirects from aged domains.

    • Sorry but that's just ridiculous Had a site ranked #1 just 2 days ago and it's sitting there. So it's certainly not true for all keywords.

  • If the number 1 competitor's site is much older than you and has more and better content and more backlinks, prepare yourself to dedicate your time to making him outrank.

You will need fresh unique content and be building backlinks consistently every single day. There is no short-cut, I guess.
  • Publishing articles on article directories and web 2.0 sites will really help you. However, try to have some nofollow links as well (like social bookmarks) to make your link building process naturally - Also, do not forget to PING your links and announce Google that "hey Mr.bigggg G, here I have got some new food (content) for you"

  • What have you done so far to get to #5? That is the real first question.

The second question would be if the keyword is worth the effort of getting to #1. Is it bringing you in any traffic at position #5. What are the searches that keyword gets etc.

    • You shall have to do 4 things.

      1. Improve the on-page content to better align with topic and maximize on-page SEO.

      2. Improve trust factor of your site.

      3. Get more backlinks of higher quality (will also take care of trust) - remember to diversify.

      4. Improve the social factors such as social sites, social bookmarks, social likes (Facebook, Twitter, G+1 etc).

Scale each as much as you require.
  • Focus on backlinkin especially authority backlinks
  • Get yourself mentioned and linked to in a high PR site by guest blogging or maybe they could give you a review, anything to get your link in the body of the article. It's preferable if the article contains your keyword, not just your link. Continue to provide quality content on a regular basis (using your keyword) and work on backlinking every day.

Keep at it, really. That's the main thing.

  • Just keep building Links consistently. Emphasize on Quality specially Authoritative Links.
One day you'll get the position hopefully.
  • Usually, when a site reaches the front page of Google and then it is to go higher in positions, every single step can be very important and moving from one position to another one above can prove to be complicated. For example, it is almost easy to go from position 70 to 25 through gathering some good links quickly but going up from 5th to 4th spot may demand a lot of work because the competition gets tighter and naturally some extra work would be demanded.

Some points can be mentioned in here like the age of domains that are currently holding better ranks than your site, the measures that are used by admins of those sites and what links they have used which have led to their current ranks. You naturally have been doing right things because your rank already proves this but from now on you need to work very smartly and also try to be patient because your ranking improvements may demand weeks and months of work.

Get some authority links, the ones coming from pages, directories, blogs and sites that closely are related to the niche in which your domain is active and do not forget to add valuable contents to your site, they add to your portal's values.
  • I have the same problem - I have wesbite that is ranked high and no matter what I do it does not want to go higher.

Going from >20 to #4 was easy for me...but I am stuck here. I confirm - the higher you are the more difficult it is to go higher. Websites ranked high seem to be more 'stable' than others - so even if I do some backlink blasts I do not see google dance! While I do see google dance with other of my websites that are ranked worse.

Does your domain name containg your main keyword? What about your competitors? I have noticed that all websites which are ranked higher than me(and I am #4) have also main keyword in their domains....I believe this is one of main factors I can not jump over them so easily.

Start out by building 5 new internal pages, all 5 pages 100% targeting the old page that is already ranking in the SERPs. On each new page include an anchor-text keyword pointing at the old page that is already ranking. Next, create a few quality external backlinks with the same exact anchor-text as the old page.

When you finish the above steps, let everything sit for at least a week. If nothing changes double the amount of quality external links that you created for the new pages (pointing at the new pages), always use the same exact keyword your trying to rank on the old page that's already ranking #4 in the SERPs.

What you'll end up doing is creating authority for the keyword that is ranking at #4 in the SERPs.

Think of it like this, If your going to a fight (trying to rank pages in the SERPs), bring some help (supporting pages).

Seriously, Google likes multiple pages all related to the same subject/keyword. Whatever you do, make sure that every single page is 100% unique, otherwise you'll have pages buried in the supplemental SERPs.

    • Analyze your competition. See what kinds of back links they have and try to get as many as possible from the same sites. And build as many additional high quality, high PR back links to your own site as possible. Then wait. It can take some time for Google to index your back links. But competition analysis and good back linking are two ways to improve your rankings. You've just got to be dedicated and diligent about it.
    • True. Keywords in domain still important but what's more important is that the person who owns the domain with keyword in it, we can assume they are seo savvy and are working to keep their rankings. It's not as simple as hey look he got keyword in domain and I cant beat him.
  • I recently created a thread here on my SEO Strategy, maybe it helps:

  • Depends of your keywords, competition, current backlinking done, etc..

Write something, otherwise it's silly question.
  • Keep doing whetever you did to get from x# to 5#, just in bigger scale.
  • Strengthen your SEO campaign for that site. You will surely get the result in the days to come.
  • if you are stuck on position 5 then you need to do competitor analysis and check their backlinks, try to get backlinks from the same source from where they are getting. Article marketing and local business directories will helps you in getting ranking
  • How old is the site? Aged domains will handle higher PR page links than newer ones. IF you are at find get some PR 1's and 2's, for your keyword, monitor the progress, keep building regular links, and if you need get a couple of PR 3's or higher, but make sure to monitor your progress, if you page has receive and pr page backlinks it could fall back, and you may have to use another strategy.
  • Wow lots of great info on this page. Thanks everyone
  • Continue to work on your backlinking strategy.
  • Just curious if you noticed any difference in traffic when you went from the bottom of page one up to position #5?

  • Get Matt Cutts to link to your website because it is amazing in quality.

If that is out, then outsource some BMR articles until you hit #1! I've heard some people having decent luck with ALN too but cannot verify personally.
  • From time to time, I see talk here about getting an ".edu" link. Does that usually mean a link from a comment on a .edu blog? If so, assuming .edu links are esteemed, would a .edu blog link be more desired than a non-edu blog comment link?

    • I think if you could place a link on a blog page that was PR4 + (not just domain) that would help regardless of TLD. Always shoot for high PR links.
  • You should build more high quality backlinks (but do it slowly in a day). The more high quality links you have, the better chance you can outrank your competitors.
  • Wheter its about moving up from #5 to #1 or from #500 to #1 the answer is the same - You need quality backlinks to your site.

  • Like many others have suggested, do a keyword difficulty study and see why your competitors are ranking high. Most of the times, few links from High PR sites would boost your rankings. An easy way would be to get some links from High PR Paid directories.
  • Just go to this site: Backlinks Checker Tool - Backlink Watch , enter your competitor's website, and reveal many of their backlinks in a matter of minutes.

How can this tool help you? Use your imagination. If you see that the site that your competitor's backlink is placed on allows dofollow comments (the tool shows this), go make a comment on that same site using your keyword as the anchor text. This technique will help you to get the powerful backlinks that your competitors have.
  • With regards to BMR suggestions... BMR does work... but sometimes it really is tough to hit the number one spot especially if your opponents are very competitive... BMR should also be just a part of your strategy as well and you should have other weapons in your arsenal..

If you need writers for your articles though... you might want to try our service. thanks
  • backlinks, backlinks and backlinks .... keep on building it.
