I have a website built around a keyword that would pay well but is highly competitive. I've had the site for a year and a half. When it first got indexed it was on page two. I was excited but now I understand a good ranking for new sites is only temporary.

I started modifying the site design and building lots of backlinks in the beginning (at the time with mostly forum profiles). The site steadily slipped back to around page 80 (position 800). I left the site alone for the last 6 months.

To my surprise, when I checked the rank for the first time in months I was in position 70. A week later it moved up to 67.

Then, 2 days ago I started building good backlinks on a blog network (blog-blueprint). The posts were all original and about 300 words. I built 20 back links for two days (40 total).

When I checked my rank I am now back to position 255!

What to do? Leave it alone, or keep building backlinks? Twenty each and every day, or less? It was going so well, just ignoring the site!

Low quality links will keep your pages bouncing around the SERPs, while your building links.

I have no idea what blog-blueprint is, what kind of links are they? Sounds like low quality links.

It is all about consistency and yours is very inconsistent.
Build reputable back links consistently and you won't jump as much.

Is Blog-Blueprint any good? If not find a better source like Blogging Underground.

I had a fresh site ranked 12 on page two for 3 weeks, but then slipped to page 8. This will happen.

The key is to set up a regular back linking plan

      It's a blog network (blog-blueprint com)

I've had a LOT of success with it on all my other sites. They ask a minimum 100 word post. Mine are all 250 to 350 words.

I'm thinking it's because I just started adding new backlinks after leaving it alone for a long time. The profile links were when the site was new (it's a year and a half old) and I just started trying to get it to page one.

Remember that SEO has no concrete theory when it comes to ranking a site. Perhaps your method worked well before, but I think it has a less value nowadays since you have not gained anything from it.

I suggest you to conduct a general site analysis and audit to figure out what's hindering your site to boost its ranking.

You need to build a sensible number of backlinks consistently and over a longer period of time. Being human you can only realistically build a certain number of links per day so if you go crazy and buy one of the packages which gives you 5,000 links over night you may see a temp boost but you are likely to be penalized.

You also need to be aware what anchor text you are using for your links. Make sure to always used your keyword in the anchor but to mix it up a bit.

Try backlinking from relevant sites where possible rather than just random sites.

Also bear in mind the number of outbound links on each page. The higher the number the weaker your backlink is. This is one reason that forum posts and blog comments are often only semi useful. Even if they start out more powerful they tend to get diluted with time.

If you do need help with backlinking let me know. We have a fantastic service which will build you 500 permanent, relevant, well anchored backlinks with decent pr at a natural rate of between 0-8 per day.
