Target keyword = "marketing coach Pittsburgh"

Hyperlink in blog says "marketing coach in Pittsburgh"

Will the word "in" screw things up since it's not exactly the same keyword phrase?

If you're referring to keyword research within the GKT, then yes.

Where can I learn more about this specific topic?

I've searched for keyword tutorials and stuff but the videos I found don't specifically talk about this detailed stuff.

    This is what I do
I just go to Google and type in my question. Up pops many times old threads in warrior forum, seems to work better than using the search function on this forum

also up comes many Squidoo lenses, Hubpages, youtube videos, and other forum posts on the same topic I am searching

IMO this is the BEST Way to learn about a topic. It gives you not only a nice variety of answers but it is much quicker than waiting for responses to a question on the forum. Many times old threads on warrior forum might have 30 to 40 replies on the same topic you are now trying to ask. and that thread might be over a period of weeks or months. So thats a valuable huge source of information

That is not true at all. While that helps, you can do

      marketing coach in Pittsburgh
      Pittsburgh marketing coach
      a marketing coach Pittsburgh
      best marketing coach in Pittsburgh

for anchor text and you will see results for your targeted keyword.

A little variation in anchor text is a must anyhow.

Once a certain percentage of your incoming links are exactly the same and overstep an unknown threshold your page gets penalized in the SERPs.

If you have done perfect on-page optimisation, then you have to go for backlinks via both keywords, In most cases, Google sees both keywords are different things, It is better to mix your backlinks for both the keywords.
