It's hard. I was *told* the best way to get listed on Dmoz is to know/pay an editor. I have tried getting my site on Dmoz for 6 years now...

I can't comment on the traffic, but getting on Dmoz sure is desirable. You can pay $200 to Yahoo to suggest your site. i heard good things about that, but the scary part is if they reject your site, you don't get your money back. And your $200 only gets you one year on Yahoo. You'll have to pay another $200 to yahoo next year.

I have tried to get my site listed in DMOZ, but its very hard in my own experience. Anyway, I've already forgot about it until I saw this thread. Maybe, I should try again.

DMOZ is a open Directory. It is a large, categorized directory of websites and pages, which is staffed by volunteers. Every website and page that is added to the directory has to be manually reviewed before it is included. Being listed in the directory is free.

I have been trying for nearly 2 years now to get listed in dmoz - total pain, gearmonkey is probably right the only way maybe to know or even pay an editor

Took me probably a year and a half but I got one of my sites in. It didn't really help. I feel better sending 50k blog comments at my site whenever I feel though I think DMOZ helps you sustain your position after the dances, but Im probably wrong.

Its good to get listed in Dmoz. But since its becoming close to impossible now, you should consider submitting to other quality directories, especially niche directories.

Yes Dmoz is a business directory and it really helps to get high links but you should take care of some things so that you can get fast approval because DMOZ wants to achieve a high quality, content rich resource in which the general public will consider useful and indispensable. DMOZ expects their editors and reviewers to keep this high standard and only allow websites with original, unique and valuable informational content that contributes something unique to the category's subject.

So you should take care that do not submit websites that have identical content but have different URL's, similar content to another website you already have listed in DMOZ.Do not submit your URL with each page as a separate submission.Do not submit websites that have pages that are not working properly, are under construction, have broken graphics, or broken links, or are redirecting to another website.Do not submit websites with illegal content and the websites that are just a bunch of links to affiliate programs.

3-4 years? Holy C**p!

I submitted my e-commerce store at the beginning of this year and have yet to hear anything lol, but it seems like nothing will happen now. Oh well... time to focus my efforts elsewhere

4-5 years, that's at the time I actually GET to a category. Those are the LUCKY categories. As it is, many of the submissions have already turned to parked domains. I would not be surprised that the wait eventually stretches to 8-9 years, if DMOZ lasts that long.

The web is swelling, domains keep appearing and disappearing, and the volunteer base is ever shrinking. Webmasters are finally getting the message that the links don't help rankings, especially since Panda, fewer and fewer apply to edit.

For many, the motivation for editing was that there was SOMETHING at stake, a link with value that webmasters were vying for. Even with few visitors, the ODP was helping Google. Google was returning many categories in the the top SERP. That's no longer the case, the links are devalued, and still there are virtually no visitors. The stakes are gone.
