changes. All the changes. What worked yesterday probably won't work tomorrow.

I remember when you could rank on the first page with a mass amount of link directories. Then that went obsolete. Then you could rank on the first page using article directories, then google Panda came out and devalued the links to article marketing.

I've decided the best was is, instead of going for 50,000 backlinks, just go after 1 high-page rank authority backlink. One high quality backlink is worth more than 10's of thousands of low quality, spammy, backlinks... the spammy backlinks google hates.

Yea I'd agree with this. Everytime Google makes a change to their alog, we all hold our breathe. Thankfully my sites are all built on solid SEO fundamentals and are unlikely to vanish overnight, but it is still a worry nonetheless.

For me, it’s the back button. Because if your bounce rates are too high, it could signal the search engines that there is nothing substantial in your site.

I'm surprised noone has come out with a plugin which monitors this. IF someone clicks the back button a pop up shows up asking if they really want to leave or some other obscure question and then refreshes the page their on if they say no. I don't think the back button has the same effect if someone has to go back twice does it?

For me, the algorithm change is SEO's biggest enemy. When the Google Panda algorithm was implemented few months ago, it made a big impact to those websites that are fully optimized by the SEO specialists. It would be worthless if Google has changed their rules again.

Great Question! In My Opinion, Biggest Enemy in Search Engine Optimization is Algorithmic Update! These update are the biggest threat and many Search Engine Optimizers Finds it The Biggest Threat because Panda Algorithm Destroys all their Efforts!

    Nice question, Matt!

I believe that the biggest SEO challenge (if not enemy) are multiple traps set up by smart internet marketers who make money offering SEO solutions.

You can't imagine how often I shelled out my hard-earned cash when I was just starting out!

    Here are the lessons learned:

    1. Don't believe in magic SEO ebooks/tools/services that advocate do-nothing-and-get-all approach. Want it or not, SEO requires time to master. Even if you plan to build a team and outsource certain tasks, you should have a general understanding of how SEO works.

    2. Don't spend too much time reading other Internet Marketers' blogs - their aim in most cases is not to educate you, but convert you into a buyer of their own stuff. Rather spy on your competitors or SEO industry trendsetters to see what they really do to build links, increase social engagement.

    3. Start real practice as soon as possible - that's the best knowledge you can get. Don't get stuck on the theory stage too long.

    4. There is software to bought, there are courses to be taken, there are books to be read - but you should make informed buying decisions about that stuff. When you're starting our, make sure you read http://static.googleusercontent.com/...rter-guide.pdf and get the whole lots of ways free Google tools can assist you with. Because very often beginners would sign up for pricey backlink checkers with the only intension to check their own backlinks! That's ignorance!

The fact that it exists at all.

    SEO shouldn't even exist.

Its existence has totally screwed up marketing as we know it and has to a great degree diverted the attention of marketers away from giving value to...just SEOing everything.

It's not my enemy anymore, I got better at it as the time passed - consistency. If you are not consistent with your work, your SEO results will be mediocre at best. Consistency is really key in SEO more than anywhere else.

Conflicting advice and strategies when followed 100%.

Ideally, an SEO strategy needs to be put together of bits and pieces from other strategies. Don't be a sheep, think before you do.
