Treillian free keyword tool. It gives you the top 100 variations of a single keyword. It's free, and their biggest keyword tool is called "Keyword Discovery"... which gives you access to over 10,000 keywords for a given keyword phrase. But you gotta pay for Keyword Discovery... i think it's like $60/month.

The Google Keyword Tool + Excel to sort the data. Most of the tools use the GKT anyway. So you may as well go to the source.

Packerfan has a pretty good tutorial in his sig about using the two together.

I blogged and talked about this often already, after many years "keyword research" i don't give a darn anymore about so called "competition" values and HARDLY use any KW research software anymore.

The only criteria i need is "searches per month", and Adwords keyword tool is all i need. If i need to check competition, a look at the first and second page in Google is enough.

That's the same thing I do. A lot of people still seem to be obsessed with overall competition when they really should just be looking at page 1. And even beyond that, the top 3 competition.

The best method to find the most suitable keywords for your site is your competitors site. No tools can be useful if you can not identify your competition. If you know your competitors you do not need any tool to find out or research the keywords.

      In no particular order

Love ubersuggest for seed words - it's uber

      The old grey stuff

Of course the old commonly misspells and double words some of seobook tools are good for that or do it yourself.

Depending on what campaigns you are running then adwords tool or if you are running on adcenter then their tool. So many good paid tools for ppc.

Just for niche research then market samurai is pretty cool. Not free but you could get a 40 day trial which was enough time to find your words.

Wordtracker free and of course - adwords, alexa, insights, trends, quantcast.

    I use a combination:

google adwords keyword tool because it's free, advanced search options, good populated list.

wordtracker.com because their tool reveals hundreds of keywords you simply would not realize on your own or with brainstorming. it's not free so not many marketers use this service. which means there are keywords you can find that others aren't finding.
