My website is an EMD and has gone from page 8 to page 30 overnight for the main keyword. What's odd is one of my secondary keywords is ranking on page 11 for my main keyword? Is this typical? Or am I sandboxed for too many links?

This is pretty typical. Hopefully you'll get back much higher than page 8 soon.

    Hi there,

While "Google dance" is indeed "typical", the reasons for it are often completely misunderstood. Understanding it will help you rank!

I've done quite extensive research into this and I can tell you that this is a reflection of how much Google "trusts you". In other words, it's the "applied Trust Rank." Most people don't know much about TR because Google says precious little about it within its pages. But - it CAN be worked out.

Trust Rank is based on a combination of factors, off- and on-page ones, where the most important aspect is QUALITY. Quality of content (confirmed algorithmically through the consistency of your site's semantic environment, i.e. correct usage of LSI terms, etc, not just keyword density for the target keyword), and quality of backlinks (with "natural" backlinks reaping the highest rewards, or at the very least something which "looks" natural, lol).

The above view of "Trust Rank" as well as "Google dance" can actually be tested quite easily:

    * Monitor your rank over a period of 24 hrs, checking it once every hour or two and logging it in a spreadsheet.

    * Also, if you are able to go through a proxy, then pick a few IP's in different regions of the country and run the same test there.

    * You'll see the rank go up and down - but the more solid your site is and the more trusted it is, the less fluctuation there will be.

If you wanted to, you can even put a "number" to your Trust Rank. Establish what is the (rough) statistical percentage of clicks for that Google rank, then:

    * Go to Google Keyword Tool and get the EXACT match for this keyword. You can use the Global number, why not.

    * Now, multiply this number by the statistical percentage for your rank. So, if you're at #1 (on average, over a period of 1 month), the statistical number of clicks for this is around 40%. And if your keyword has the [exact] number of searches of, say, 1000, then "YOUR" share should be 400 visits. If you're at #10, you're likely to get between 1 and 2 percent of the clicks, so you "SHOULD" get 10-20 visits. And so on.

    * NOW - go to your Google Analytics and see how many visits did you ACTUALLY receive for that keyword.

    * If you were "supposed" to get 400, but only got 4, your trust rank is 1% - for THIS keyword. If you get MORE than 100% then you're well on your way and this means you'll also be getting excellent results on all your other keywords. If you get 0% - you can see you have weaknesses which need to be addressed - Google's algorithm doesn't think you've got the goods. In fact, any keyword Trust Rank below 5% should be looked at as a warning of sorts. Measure ALL your keywords like this to arrive at a keyword-set TR. Trust ranks above 75% are ALMOST free of "Google dance!" SITE trust rank above 75% gets virtually NO "Google dance" (definitely in regions using the same language) - in my experience at least.

    Hope this helps.

Just one of a few dozen totally new bits of info I've discovered over the past couple of years, lol. You heard it here first!

    cheers paul

Yea as the above posts mentioned, this is extremely common. This has happened with just about every single one of my sites, and they have all come back stronger. A lot of them are now sitting in the top 3 on Google page one.

Just keep doing what you were doing and you'll see, you'll be back stronger than ever.

Based on your experiences, is the Google Dance a good or bad thing for a site? For example im working on a site that over the last 2 weeks has been jumping.

Let's say main keyword was on page 6 then few days later page 14, then 2-3 days later back to page 5, then few days later page 11, then few days later page 4 then days later page 9, then page 4 then back to page 8...

is this a good sign?? I hear lots of people say that after the dance the site usually comes back stronger..is that right or should I be worried?

This is so normal my friend I couldn't tell you. depending upon how long you been dancing. This could go on for a while before you really set in place.

You may be good on building all your links and have better authority then the #1 site..but until they are ready to place you in the top 5..then you just need to just keep a eye on it.

I look at one of my niches site yesterday and I was number 21..and all of a sudden I'm 6 today..so just be patient.
