Im looking to make a niche site about iphone games. I go into google keyword tool type in "iphone games" and come up with these results

competition: low
global search: 1,220,000
local search: 246,000
cpc: 2.67

is this a good keyword to target?

doing a google search comes up with 175 million result so I dont feel the competition is that "low". Am I miss understanding how to use keyword tool?

or would something like iphone games free be something better

comp: low
global: 201000
local: 49500
cpc: 2.51
google search results: 1.1 billion - yes billion lol

  • That's a pretty broad and incredibly competitive keyword. So I'd personally stay away.

Also, make sure you're doing "exact match" searches. And in this case, i'd see if I could come up with more targeted keywords. Off the top of my head: best iphone sports games, cheap games for iphone, top 10 games for iphone, etc. (Feel free to steal any of these. )

One more thing, when analyzing the competition, don't get caught up in analyzing ALL of the competition. Stick with the top 10 sites. And to a greater extent, the top 3 sites.

  • so I shouldn't focus on the search result but the monthly searches instead?

so for "best action iphone games" i get 2,340 results but only only 320 local searches with a high cpc of $5.

sorry if I have so many questions, im only about a month deep into this website creation and SEO stuff. My other two sites I created because I want to quit my normal job and just create websites for clients and the other because I love fantasy baseball and football. Im doing this site now because i've been doing a lot of reading about users that create this "niche" sites that generate ad revenue and I figured that would be nice to help me in getting my other two sites going.
  • Make sure you are using the exact searches in keyword tool instead of broad searches. Also for the competition search for the term with " " around the term in google and look at how many results come up. That is a better gauge of competition. The lower the better. I like under 100,000 but if it is really good I will go up to 500,000.

    • ok. doing a little topic jumping here to my fantasy sports site since its live and i can use it as an example. lets say that I want to rank for "fantasy baseball player rankings" - 81,000 google results

it also comes up with in keyword tool

      [exact] Local monthly searches: 480
      "phrase" Local monthly searches: 1300
      broad Local monthly searches: 1900

if I were to try to rank this page of my site - Fantasy Baseball - Top 200 Ranking of 2012 : Fantasy Sports

i would have an easier time getting a high "serp" for that then just fantasy baseball by itself. if im correct so far then if I go manage to rank that page high and I get a decent amount of traffic to that page then would I consider that to be a "landing page"

once again im new to this so im trying to get all the terms right and trying to get a months worth of reading into some type of working knowledge lol.

thank you for all that help.

  • You are making some of the classic keyword research mistakes that most beginners (and even more experienced people) make.

Have a read through my post on what are the biggest keyword research mistakes to hopefully put you on the right track.

  • ok so now that I've choosen my keyword i'll start building a page that has good keyword density, back linking to that page, and what else?

If a site extension / gets a lot of traffic will that help the page rank of my main site?

    • Only if it ranks well and Apple doesn't send their lawyers over to bring your site down for breach of trademark.

      Indeed it does.
