Guest blogging on your niche specific sites will be better as the chances are you will get more targeted visitors.

I agree. Guest blog posts should be to get targetted exposure rather than just for a backlink. In fact, guest blog posts simply to gain backlinks would be expensive (depending on the blog of course).

For me, the page that your backlink is on should be a high PR page. This will give you a high PR link. Quality will always beat quantity when it comes to backlinks.

Article directories were not originally brought about for SEO purposes. They are intended as repositories for articles offered for syndication.

You also are misinterpreting 'Page Rank'. Pages receive page rank, not websites. Ezine Articles' home page may have a PR-6 page rank, but your article is initially published on a PR-0 page. Furthermore, backlinks from article directories are non-contextural - or practically worthless.

You will gain much more benefit by guest blogging with niche-relevant blogs. Actually your benefits will be two-fold, you will achieve context-relevant backlinks, plus access to their own readers.

Never ever try to sell in guest blogs - the owners will turn down your contributions.

really both ways can be beneficial. consider...
a guest post on a blog that gets very little traffic or low pr passes on a "link" with not much value. since there is not much traffic (hypothetical) there is little chance of being syndicated by other webmasters.

    article directories
article directories by themselves do not have the same search engine clout they did a couple of years ago. but webmasters like myself sill need "good" content for our websites. we still go to the "quality" article sites for that content. when we post an article on our site it has the authors link. some of our sites get a lot of traffic and all most all webmasters submit a rss feed to a large number of feeds. of course this in turns allows other sites to pick up content from those feeds making some articles almost viral.

so they both can be a good thing.

Very true Mike, and the point taken here is no matter where you publish it, make sure your article is top notch.
with article sites, there's a good chance to get it viral, and on long term you might get plenty of backlinks from it, while guest blogging is more targeted to your niche, and if chosen correctly will have more value by search engines eyes.

Of course Article marketing will help you a lot more. And by the way it is quite easier to build some extra backlinks from some do-follow article directories

I would suggest that both are important. As google like links from different sources, so build links from both the sources.

Guest blogging is better because it can give you high quality backlink and traffic that are targeted. Article directories can drive you a little bit of traffic but linkjuice is lower. Best option is to get a couple of guestposts and do lots of article submissions for quantity of links.

I have made a good deal of money from article directories and I am just not sure that Google gives them much love post panda. You can post to directories for backlinks, but I am not sure it is as effective as it once was. Instead, your backlinking programs probably need to be more involved than that these days. Like a link wheel or something.

In terms of quality I'd say guest blogging like everyone else but you should always be building a diverse portfolio of backlinks from several sources so it be would be wise to do a bit of article submissions, other do-follow links, etc. to look natural.

Most here are right, guest blogging is your best bet BUT, there is a stipulation:

Your site has to be good enough to market to blog owners. If you build a rinky-dink site using a default template from WP or whatever, odds are, most blog owners that you proposition will look at your site and say to themselves, "I don't want to endorse this crap to my loyal readers."

So take the extra time or spend the extra bit of money that it takes to get a great looking site and guest blogging will be a lot easier for you.

I had some good experience of getting articles bookmarked by the article directory. So, if they do so then going for it cannot be compared and if your article stays on the PR Page of the article directory then still there is no comparison of that.

Such things are rare but they work.
