Competition Level

In continuing to develop my skills in SEO and keyword targetting I have been spending a lot of time getting to know the google keyword tool of adwords.

As site builders and people looking to earn some income from adsense, we build sites that have certain focuses to certain keywords. When I was first using keyword tools I thought that I should be focusing in on phrases that had a "low" competition since I wouldn't be competiting against sites to get traffic and people to click on the links to my site. But I believe that I am wrong in my past thinking.

Wouldn't I want to be targetting keywords that have "High" competition since users more fequently click on those links making them have a "high" demand from advertisers?

I know it might be a little more ambitious to take on a "high" competition site because, from my findings that if it has a high cometition there usually the amount of search results for that phrase goes up and does the quality of those sites.

Am I correct in my knew thinking?

  • If by "high" and "low" you are referring to what shows up in the Adsense Keyword Tool, that has nothing to do with the competition level of the search results. That only refers to the competition of the AdWords buyers.
  • I'm assuming you are talking about the "low", "medium", and "high" levels of competition that Google displays in the keyword tool. This is the level of competition between ADVERTISERS for a particular keyword. A "high" level of competition in the Google Keyword tool is a good sign for someone trying to make money from Adsense; it means that people are fighting over that keyword and driving the CPC up in the process.

    The key is to find a highly commercial keyword (buying keyword) that has an available EMD domain. In regards to how difficult it may be to rank that keyword, you will need to check how many other websites use that keyword in the Title and URL. Under 100k results will usually indicate that you have a good chance of ranking.

    The last thing you want to check is the top ten results for the potential keyword. Look at each website's domain age, number of backlinks, PR, number of indexed pages, number of social factors, and other similar metrics.

    If it looks like you can compete with the top five results, then you're good to go.

    • see glad I clear this up. So i should find something that a lot of people purchase online and doesn't really have a specific through search results. Then once I do that I create a site around it. Hopefully then I can rank well on that keyword and have users click on my links.
