Duplicate content

I had a site that was slowly climbing to page 1 and then sunk to page 12. It has more backlinks thank any on page 1 and it has good on page seo. I coudn't work out why until I copyscaped my site and found chunks of duplicate text. Unfortunately I outsourced the bulk of the articles to fiverr (big mistake!) Needless to say I have now changed these and ensured seo is still ok (using seopressor).

Should my ranking get better or should I just give up with it?

  • You have a good chance of getting your ranking back up, but keep in mind that it may take sometime.
  • As long as you've removed the duplicate articles you'll be fine. You mind PM'ing me your URL? I'd like to see what you mean by "good" on page seo. I can give you some feedback if you'd like.

    • Chunks of duplicate content is common. Big sites
have lots of chunks of duplicate content. That's
not a duplicate content penalty. Why people confuse
      the issue is beyond me.

Think about it. The bloke above me has a sig. Quite
a large sig and chunk of "content." He's got
44 posts. That's 44 places of chunks of duplicate
      content on the WF.

Now how many members here have a sig? Some are
paragraphs even. There is a zillion chunks of duplicate
content all over the WF. Are they penalized? Of course
      not.

Your site is probably under going normal fluctuations
as the internet is not static.

Cause and effect here at the WF always seems to
be prevalent in muddling things up.

Duplicate complete articles are fine as well on the
same site. People who just don't know that are
always screaming the sky is falling.

People never seem to put duplicate content in context
of a "duplicate" content penalty, but just go gaga over
the mere fact that anyone has duplicate content.

Seriously. How many tweets get retweeted? Facebook posts
go viral....on facebook....amazon has a never ending supply
      of duplicate content...

  • It depends on the guys site - if he has an information blog and just re-posting the top sites posts he's not going to get anywhere. If he's got an e-commerce site with a bunch of generic product descriptions that all of the other retailers have, that's fine. His site isn't penalized but if it's anything along the lines of the first scenario he's only going to benefit from replacing the duplicate content with quality content.
  • Give more link juice to your money site... And keep improve your site, like off page, content and page speed.
  • You have no way of knowing if you have more backlinks than anyone on page 1. Not all backlinks show up and it may be that you have far fewer backlinks than they do regardless of what the backlink checkers say.
  • What is the age of your site? Often times if the site does not have enough authority Google dances it around to keep a safe first page...

    • My site is maintaining first position since last 2 years as I am doing seo for that. I take care about no spamming and no duplication in the content. always do seo optimization with relevant content.

  • replace content with unique content and make use of canonicalization to stake claim on the content (though many would disagree, I think it does help)......
  • I would suggest you to build one way back links from theme based PR sites. This will surely help you in getting fast results

    • even I am looking for theme based PR sites but where can I get that
  • Change the copied content, when it comes to outsources, be sure to check about it. continue building high pr backlink and you're on your way to rank1
  • Don't give up. Your site will come up at the same spot sooner or later
  • Constant SEO is the key to get top rankings, if you give up, then someone else will replace you.
  • It definitely takes time to get your ranking back after a duplicate content issue. Get the content sorted and then steady link building.
