I'm noticing something I never really paid attention to before...

I started using a new ranking service that makes easy to compare Google, Yahoo, Bing results for the same keywords.

I have a bunch of EMDs and bunch that aren't... I'm not EMD martyr and I don't think they're necessary at all.

However, Yahoo and Bing seem to place a huge importance on it according to what I'm seeing.

I have sites with zero link building yet ranking as high as #9 while not ranking in the top 100 with Google. It's not just one site. It's more like 20 that are ranking between 9-20 with very little to no off-page SEO work being done.

Almost none of them are in the top 100 in Google...

So, while it's a relatively small sample size, to me the results are pretty clear. For the big G, EMD not so relevant anymore, Yahoo and Bing are still slow to catch on.

That's my $.02 anyway.

Bing and Yahoo may place more importance, but I think it will always be a big factor with google as well because it indicates relevance, and at the end of the day Google's business model is built around relevance.

I always make sure to have my keywords included in my URLs and my main keyword in my domain name...

But it's almost shocking to see the three side-by-side.

I've only been monitoring this for a week, but like I said this is with a block of sites that I haven't gotten to yet, except for content and internal linking.

I'll keep an on eye on it over time and see what happens.

huh really? I have found the opposite. Most of my EMDs don't rank well at all in Yahoo and Bing but rank on the first page in Google.

EMD is not working for google anymore, Google give preference to content and backlink.
Yahoo and bing still giving preference to EMD.

I think it's a bit misleading to say that EMD's "don't work anymore". They continue to and always will work, most likely. They give a bonus/benefit to your rankings on Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.

What the OP is pointing to or at is that EMD's don't have as much weight as they used to with the search engines. That makes sense...Matt Cutts from Google had mentioned possibly "dialing down" the importance of EMD in the algorithms.

Still...having keywords in the domain name is naturally a great way to tell people (and the search engines) what the site is about. I doubt that will ever completely go away.
