301 Direct. Did I screw up big time?

I have been trying to rank my site on page 1 since August. After months and months of hard work, BINGO! I did it.

The conversions were there, but not what I expected so I wanted to split test my site with the affiliate product site directly to see which converted better. Sooo....I did a 301 redirect.

Now after 3 days with the 301 redirect my page is no where to be found. Actually my order page, my privacy page and my disclaimer page are ranking hire then my homepage. I can't even find my homepage at all.

Has anyone experienced this? Did I just blow 6 months of hard work down the crapper by trying to optimize too much? Is this what they mean when they say Pigs Get Fat. Hogs get Slaughtered (being too greedy)?

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

301 redirects are the great way to transfer your authority of site to another. Your problem is not so clear to me did you redirected your homepage to other site ?

    Hi pbbiet,

Yeah, basically I was running my site on hostgator. My site was an in depth review of a product along with a 3 month study of using the product. Once I got to page 1, I felt my page was not converting well so I just ran a redirect from my page, to the affiliate offer page. Welcome to MyPage.Com redirected to www.affiliateofferpagemySubID.com

This way when someone landed on my page, they would just get sent directly to the offer.

Well if you 301 redirect the home page to the affiliate page then the homepage is not going to rank anymore as you have effectivley told google that it doesn't exist anymore and has changed to the affiliate page.

Yes he is right you transferred the authority of your homepage to other page then how can that page rank ? 301 are much different than meta redirects. Remove 301 and build some links may be in few days you will be back at your position.

        Yikes!!

Ok so if I have removed the 301 redirects am I starting from scratch with my link building, or will the old links still count? I have written a massive amount of articles and have web 2.0 properties directed to the home page.

This is indeed a huge $$$ mistake. It's already costing me $1000's.

I will keep this thread update with my next steps so anyone else making the same mistake can learn from mine.

You are not starting again. The 301 has caused the problem so just reverse it and everything will be the same. The links are still there just currently pointing to the affiliate page via the 301. The reason you would make some extra effort to build some new links is to shorten the recovery time.

reverse the 301 asap and hopefully your ranings will also come back sooner rather than later and it won't cost you too much.
