My home page was ranked on google for a particular keyword and now the home page has switched to an inner page which is ranked for the same keyword. My keyword ranking has now reduced greatly as with some other keywords.

I did not optimize this keyword for the inner page rather I optimized it for the home page but now it is ranked for inner page on google. What may be the cause of this? Will google correct this?

Usually the result of an over-optimization penalty.

There is a such thing as going overboard with optimizing SEO in Google's eyes.

I 100% agree with this. Especially in this day and age. A high keyword density will very rarely benefit you, but can definitely damage your rankings. It's now best practice to optimize the Title, and H1 tags. But the content should be as natural as possible.
