hello,

I have an Amazon product review site in the wine cooler (refrigerator not actual drinks) niche.

I have had my seo guy working the site since May 2011. he has gotten on page 1 and #1 overall for the majority of lower tier KW's I tasked him to but my site has been unable to reach page 1 for main kw's like wine cooler, wine coolers, wine refrigerators etc.

my site has been on page 2 for these keywords for a while now and they show no real signs of going any higher, yet he (seo guy) insists he will get them to page - i don't know about that....

anyways my site is making good $$ right now, obviously not as much I'd like but enough to allow me to focus on other sites.

here's my dilemma:

1. have him continue pushing for "pipe dream" keywords that are very broad and not really targeted just because they will drive more numeric traffic

2. have him do routine maintenance to ensure the current highly ranked kw's stay in place and don't slip, and have him focus his seo efforts on another site of mine and get that ranking for lower tier yet more targeted kw's?

thoughts?

I did some quick analysis on the competition for ranking for

    wine cooler
    wine coolers
    wine refrigerators

These are certainly high competition keywords ("wine coolers" in particular).

If the ranking of your site has been static for these keywords for some time, then it's probably safe to assume the current SEO work your "SEO guy" is using isn't going to make any inroads.

That being the case, I would go for option 2 and consolidate your current rankings and possibly target a few more long tail keywords.

Basically its the 80/20 rule, 80% of your profit will come from 20% of the effort, at this point you have your profit, instead of wasting money and time scraping out the last 20%, use that to re-invest into other sites and get those profiting
