Provide useful contents for your visitors, do SEO work for your site, stay away from backlinks spam method, keep in touch with your visitor by comments or answer their questions.

Based my experience visitors from organic traffic is most valuable. So try get ranked well on some big search engine like Google, Yahoo, Bing for your targeted keyword.

Write awesome content and it will get traffic for years. My 1999 pages still get visitors - nobody seems to have written superior content in all this time.

Now when there are so many updates by Google we should be careful with backlink building and concentrate more to on page SEO. Very good are still high PR contextual backlinks, also getting more social proof like big fan count on FB or followers on Google Plus page.

The quick strategy will be:

1) Check your most valuable keywords with any keyword tool (you could use adwords)
2) Create an excel file (or notepad!) and add your keywords inside (in the beginning try ONLY keywords with low competition)
3) Build some backlinks to your website using this keyword
4) Check regularly your SERP for this keyword, when you are at page 1 (or at least Page3..), begin with Step3 again with another keyword..

Once you understand the process, just begin to use keywords that could drive you more traffic (Of course these keywords will require more work... -> more backlinks!). But if you are working hard, I am sure you will be satisfied with your results. Good Luck

Your confused.

Same niche forums are awesome sources for direct traffic, forums suck for SEO.

The key is targeting same niche forums where targeted buyers are hanging out.

There's also a huge difference between spamming a forum & contributing to a forum with legit comments/post. Spam a moderated forum & a Mod will be all over you like a spider monkey. Contribute to a same niche forum & the traffic will last for years.

My advice is never start out as a forum member with a cheesy forum sig., think long term (years), build up your rep. on the highest traffic same niche forums, be the go to guy for a sub-niche on the high traffic forum. Don't be afraid to help people for free (within reason), your not losing money helping people, your gaining a good rep. Always stay in the same niche, If your selling auto parts (example), don't be posting irrelevant links on a weight loss forum (those people could care less about auto parts).

Slow down & think like a buyer, where's all the places people in your niche hang out? That answer will be different for each niche.

That's just one way to diversify traffic sources while targeting a single niche. You can SEO your site at the same time with quality links that actually move pages in the SERPs (forum links aren't for SEO).
