You probably will since someone may knock you off that position.

Yip, don't stop now. Perhaps you can ease off slightly, but keep building occasional high PR links to keep you rock solid.

if you convert well and you are satisfied from being #1 - yes.
in other words - you can easily get outranked (like rmolina88 said).

If you are miles ahead of your competition then you can probably take it easy for a little while, but in general to stay at #1 for most keywords with decent search volume, you need to continually build backlinks.

Shouldn't the #1 slot get their own backlinks from their users? I mean, what is the point of google ranks if they are all freakin' inflated?

What sort of competition does the term have?

If it is competitive you will probably need to keep working at it to stay on top, however if its a long tail term that was easy to rank for you might be OK, if thats the case rinse and repeat the process and get more terms ranking high

Depends on the kw. If your targeting a product launch say and the launch is 2 days away then no. You should likely hold the no.1 spot for the launch and a period of time after at which point the traffic and potential buyers for the product will decrease after launch and you can afford to lose the no1 spot and focus your attentions elsewhere.

If that's not the case then build away consitently!

Yes. Because your competitors are doing massive backlinking activities daily too. You're not the only one doing SEO.. It's everybody

If the niche is competitive try adding new content once a week and build quality backlinks consistently and you will stay and keep rolling in the $$$

Getting into first page of Google will not last for a long time if you will not build backlinks to it. So you must be consistent in doing that thing.

The great baseball player Satchell Paige once said, "don't look back, something (or someone) may be gaining on you". In other words, if you rest on your laurels, you may find one day that you've dropped in position. It's not just off-page strategies, it's on-page too.

All depends on how competitive really, but my general rule is to keep building backlinks but at a VERY low rate. And definitely lower your backlink volume slowly. Looks unnatural to get 1000 backlinks every month for 7 months and then all of a sudden drop to 12 backlinks per month.

You probably need to build more links to your site or on that particular URL. There are plenty of competitors out there, and they might be heading on your position without noticing it.
