Why should I convert my all OBL Nofollow??

I see in onpage optimization recommendation experts are advising to make all OBL nofollow. My question is why should I convert all OBLs nofollow?

Will really it helps ranking high in search engines? If yes then why?:confused:

  • No it will not help you in ranking higher in search engines.

    Rel="Nofollow" was introduced by Google for webmasters who don't want to pass their site authority to any other site. If nofollow attribute is used in any link then Google crawler (mostly search engine) will not pass site/page authority to other site.

    It has nothing to do with rankings. Yes your site/page authority will go down if your site/page has too many outbound links with follow/dofollow attribute.

    • This is not entirely true. People forget that internal links are still links, and that PR is passed through internal pages as well as from external pages. Given this, if you have 10 OBLs on one of your internal pages and 5 of them are for your Privacy, About Us, Contact pages, etc, the other 5 keyword pages (blog posts, AdSense pages, whatever) are getting as much link juice. So yes, there is good reason to make links that do not lead to pages that make money no-follow; it retains link juice for the links that need it (as in those that make money

    • Authority not only mean Page Rank, there many other parameters. Pagerank is a number assigned to your link by Google on a scale of 0-10. Higher authority will lead to higher pagerank.

      Wikipedia has a lot of authority, but a lot of pages
      have no PR, still show #1 in SERPS.

      There is no reason to nofollow outbound links.

      Think about it. Nofollow means you don't trust it.
      That's what is was for. To combat spammed links.
      Nofollow is a vote of no-confidence. Why would
      you put any links on your site that you are labeling
      as untrustworthy?

      Best thing to do is have no OBL, or leave off the nofollow.

      People have a screwed up idea as to what nofollow was
      intended for.

      Most times you don't want to bleed PR. But then why are you
      putting outbound links on your site? For looks? You get
      no points for any such nonsense.

      Any OBL on my sites are bought and paid for.

  • changing your obl links to no follow wont help your serp's but it will keep people from spamming your site

    • LOL!!!! People don't spam my site and I don't use nofollow.

      Allowing people to spam and spamming has nothing to do with
      a nofollow tag. It has been quite useless in combating spam
      anyway. Spam is spam no matter nofollow or not.

      Nofollow does not mean not seen or not "followed."

  • Actually, there are many SEO case studies on SEOmoz.org and other trust-worthy sites that show that OBL to authority, trusted sites can actually improve rankings (minimally, in most cases). If you link out to Wikipedia, CNN.com and the like, then you are basically associating your site with these authority sites.

    Of course, as with everything else, don't overdo it. Also, if your site is terrible to begin with, then linking out to Wikipedia is not going to help one bit. Do a search on SEOmoz for this topic and check out the research that they have there.
  • There is a plague going with the tactics with these nofollow links. As long as you have OBL in a controlled manner then there is no use for setting them to nofollow. If this would hurt your PR, then why do a PR10 site like usa.gov link to Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and other sites without nofollow? People just tend to overdo the nofollow linking.
    Nofollow is a way of showing that you don't trust a site you link to, so why would you link to a site that you don't trust?

    As for spamming just look at all the comment spamming that takes place on WP blogs, and those links are nofollow by default. In fact there seem to be a LOT more comment spam on WP than on e.g. BlogEngine (which mostly are dofollow).

    So to answer your question: There is no reason to set nofollow in the absolute majority of cases.
  • Good replies so far. gittar1122 was correct. Nofollow does not mean that google bots will not follow the link (at least not anymore). Any advice to nofollow all out-bound links is outdated. The nofollow links will still suck page-rank juice away from your other links (it just doesn't get transmitted to the linked page).

    I don't know where you guy's are getting the whole 'I don't trust the site I'm linking to so I'll use a no-follow' idea. Nowadays there's only one reason to use no-follow and that's when you don't want to increase the page-rank of the page you are linking to. You might want to do this when you're linking to an affiliate offer so it doesn't outrank your site in the SERPs.

    Other than that, I suggest not using nofollow at all.
  • The point of having no follow on your outbound links is to not pass on any link juice to your competitors if linking to them for relevancy etc...

    But more to the point i think, you want that extra PR from your page passed around your internal links to help boost your rankings and not let it leave your site.
